Abortion LawMSNBC host Tiffany Cross referred to Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett as an actual handmaid during a panel conversation on her Saturday morning show The Cross Connection, criticizing the high courts decision not to block Texas new abortion law, which restricts the procedure when a pregnancy has reached six weeks.
During a conversation with Amy Hagstrom Miller, president and CEO of Whole Womans Health, and MSNBC contributor Elie Mystal, Cross expressed skepticism that the Supreme Court would eventually act on the bill, which has drawn intense backlash from womens rights groups and much of the voting public.
This entire thing, about protecting the fetus when they care so little for life in this country, is beyond comprehension. If it feels like they really must hate women in Texas and all across the country, how is it possible the Supreme Court allowed this to stand? Cross said. I know that they havent ruled on it, but they can rule later. But we have an actual handmaid on the court. So I have to tell you, Im not so excited about depending on them to protect me and my right to choose.
The reference to handmaid is a comparison to Hulus dystopian drama The Handmaids Tale, in which America becomes a patriarchal theocracy where women are forcibly assigned to produce children for the commanders, as well as Barretts own history of holding the title of handmaid in a Christian group called People of Praise.

(16,288 posts)They are the women with the highest social status in Gilead. And she is married. I'm pretty sure aunts are all single.
Although they could have changed something in the TV show for all I know. I've only watched the first season.

(11,560 posts)Even the tiniest shred of doubt that ACB would do anything but give her full-throated support to that law? I mean, seriously. There was never a snowflake's chance in the Hell that is West Texas that she would be anything but a cheerleader.

(50,533 posts)If we are to assume the State of Texas has become the Republic of Gilead - which wouldn't be completely inaccurate - then Amy Coney Barrett would be an Aunt, not a Handmaid. The Aunts were running the whole womb-enslavement system. The Handmaids were the enslaved wombs.

(2,689 posts)According to the cult that owns her soul, she is to subsume her will and wishes to her husband. I would be very surprised if her decision to go along with the other fascists on SCOTUS was not made for her by her husband.
I believe Amy is a very bright, very nice little woman who feels her god has guided her to the protection of a strong and holy man whose will she must obey because, you know, from Adam to god and from Eve to god through Adam.
Its sickening, I know. But she is the epitome of 21st century Republican womanhood
