Wealthy scion of SC political dynasty shot in head

Has anyone else been following this story?
Alex Murdaugh, the wealthy head of a legal and political dynasty that has ruled over a poor rural South Carolina county for over a century, the other day was shot in the head on a lonely country road while changing a tire. His wife and son were both murdered in June inside their hunting lodge. The son had been involved in a boating accident that resulted in the death of a young girl some time before.
Murdaugh will survive. No arrests but a county full of suspects.
All straight out of Grisham or Faulkner or something.

There are two. One is obvious---the family of one of the kids who was killed did it. I mean, that one is so obvious nobody will do anything about it.

The other is that the surviving son did it. He wants to get rid of everyone so he can get his hands on the money, and maybe get free of the bullying. Maybe not so obvious, but it might make sense. Unfortunately, Daddy is too hard-headed and might survive after all.

Lawyer Is Shot Months After Unsolved Killing of His Wife and Son

For nearly three months, the question of who killed the wife and son of Alex Murdaugh, a prominent lawyer in rural South Carolina, has gripped the state’s Lowcountry region as harrowing details of the crime emerged but the police made no arrests.

On Saturday, the mystery deepened further when Mr. Murdaugh himself was shot in the head while changing a tire on the side of the road, according to his lawyer, Jim Griffin, who said Mr. Murdaugh was conscious and able to speak on the telephone from his hospital bed.

Mr. Murdaugh told one of his brothers from the hospital that he had pulled over to change the tire when someone in a truck drove past him, then drove back around and shot him, Mr. Griffin said.

Tommy Crosby, a spokesman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the police agency that is investigating the original double killing, confirmed that Mr. Murdaugh had been shot in Hampton County, a rural county that borders Georgia, but said he could provide no more details.

No vigil, no memorials: An unsettled SC town reacts quietly to Murdaugh shootings
By Katherine Kokal and Lucas Smolcic Larson
Updated September 04, 2021 04:06 PM

...

In 2019, a marine crash near Beaufort claimed the life of 19-year-old Mallory Beach. Paul Murdaugh was indicted on three felony charges related to boating under the influence during the crash. He pleaded not guilty and those charges and two lawsuits related to the crash were unresolved prior to Murdaugh’s death.

A lag between the time of the crash and the charges against Murdaugh, as well as the fact that Murdaugh was allowed to remain free and travel in-state while the case was pending, roiled residents who wanted justice. It raised tough questions about power, fairness and accountability.

That’s a lot for a little town of about 2,500 people where people know each other’s birthdays and upcoming medical procedures, so when Tuesday’s news of the double homicide started making the rounds, residents seemed unsure what to say, or whether they should say anything at all about a family that looms so large.

....

The law offices of Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick at 101 Mulberry Street in Hampton were quiet Tuesday as clients shuffled in and out. A receptionist declined to comment on the recent shooting deaths of two members of the Murdaugh family and said the firm would not release a statement on the incident. Katherine Kokal The Island Packet

Paul Terry Murdaugh prepares to leave the Beaufort County Courthouse in 2019 after having his bond modified for the three felony charges he faced for the Feb. 24 boat crash which killed Mallory Beach. Murdaugh’s defense attorney Jim Griffin asked judge Michael G. Nettles to allow Murdaugh to travel within the state. Nettles ruled that Murdaugh may travel within the state with no other modifications. The state had asked for GPS monitoring as well as alcohol monitoring which was not a condition set by Nettles. And the son who was killed was a clear case of “affluenza”, he was going to get away with his bad actions as he had in the past.
