(10,136 posts)Texas seceded from Mexico in 1835/6 (depending on when you start counting), was annexed by the US in 1845 and became a state in 1846. CA, AR, NM and the rest were acquired via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. So yes, we can give back/sell/abandon Texas to Mexico without having to give up the more sane states (although I sometimes have my doubts about some of them)
But then I'm not an expert on international treaties

(31,996 posts)Florida to Spain? How about most of the west, midwest and south to France? I guess we can give back the east coast to the UK if that is going to make people happy.

(6,034 posts)... Mexico is a heavenly Catholic nation. A very high percentage of their citizens probably would support the Texas handmaid's tale law.

(22,114 posts)TX (over $300 million excess federal dollars went to TX as of 2019, the latest year I could find).
And I must be fair, Alaska, Virginia, and Maryland all received a hefty federal paycheck vs. what they paid in to the Feds (40 out of 50 states are like this, paid in less than they receive). And you would think that heavily populated states would be lopsided in payments rec'd vs. payments made, and that's not the case...some smaller states population-wise, actually beat the 3 big states (I didn't count/use FL) in either money rec'd / money paid (think federal bases/facilities located in those states, Maryland, Virginia for example has tons of federal sites).

(25,287 posts)It would be fun.
It would give us a reason to flee.
Can't seem to find a reason to convince my family to get out of this hellhole...

(13,058 posts)And I understand frustration over the draconian abortion law that was recently enacted. But if selling Texas to Mexico is a serious suggestion it's totally ridiculous. When right wingers in Texas called for Texas leaving the Union I thought it was a ridiculous suggestion. And so is this suggestion. We are not going to solve the many problems in this country by breaking the country up.

(8,329 posts)Return social security and other federal payments. Let them form their own country. Provide relocation assistance for anyone who wants to leave. Let them have their gun culture, anti mask, anti vax, anti science, anti education, bounty hunting abortion law, everything in Texas is bigger and better attitude, their own failing power grid, education system, hospital system bullshit and see how long it is before they want to come back.

(13,058 posts)give bases to terrorists who want to attack the United States? Do we then bomb or invade Texas and risk collateral damage in the process? And what about oil and natural gas produced in Texas? Yes we need to wean ourselves off from fossil fuels but for the time being we need that gas and oil. Otherwise we would need to become more dependent on foreign sources, which is not a good thing. Did you stop to think about those issues?
bottomofthehill
(8,329 posts)Yes like any other country, if they became a haven for terror, bomb them back to the Stone Age. Oil and natural gas, they will still need to sell what they produce. They can join opec if they want. Even with the oil and natural gas issue, they are not worth the trouble. They still need a place to sell their excess energy and we are the obvious buyer. They will need to generate income in some way.

(2,116 posts)The idea amused me, and I thought it might provoke some entertaining discussion. In that, I think I succeeded.

(19,475 posts)I doubt if Mexico would want the inhabitants, or wouldn't want a lot of them, so we'd have to resettle them somewhere else in the US.
I foresee difficulties.
