Satanic Temple takes legal action against Texas abortion law

These are the same folks who, when John Boehner called Ted Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh, replied "Christians can’t just push Cruz off on Satanists.”

"The Satanic Temple argued that under The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which was created to allow Native Americans access to peyote for use in rituals, its members should be allowed to access abortion pills Misoprostol and Mifepristone without regulatory action.

Satanic Temple spokesperson, Lucien Greaves, said in a statement. “I am sure Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton—who famously spends a good deal of his time composing press releases about Religious Liberty issues in other states—will be proud to see that Texas’s robust Religious Liberty laws, which he so vociferously champions, will prevent future Abortion Rituals from being interrupted by superfluous government restrictions meant only to shame and harass those seeking an abortion.”

I'd think the Christofascists would enjoy characterizing their opposition as Democrats and Satanists.

This feeds the Q and Christofascist conspiracy theories. It's like having Nazis step up to support your cause. Not good.

I have copies of the early versions of the RFRA, as some of the Elders I worked with played key roles in its creation. The law allows, at least in theory, for full access to Sacred Sites. It would be nice if that was included to provide safe access to Planned Parenthood, etc.

Satanists Go to Court Seeking Right to Pray at City Meetings
The Satanic Temple, an atheist church with 300,000 followers, is fighting to put up shrines and secure religious equality. Or is it just a bunch of trolls?

Across the country, the Satanic Temple, an IRS-recognized atheist church with some 300,000 devotees, is waging a legal battle it says is for religious liberty, using tactics that have proved effective for Christian groups. The church, which preaches both empathy and the “freedom to offend,” has filed at least seven lawsuits in as many states, challenging the limits on what qualifies as religious expression. It says it’s looking for equal treatment in the public square. Its opponents say it’s just trolling Christianity and calling it a high-minded struggle for justice.

The litigation has had mixed results. The U.S. Supreme Court in September declined to hear the church’s appeal after its lawsuit challenging a Missouri abortion law was dismissed. The suit included a claim that the Satanic Temple’s followers are exempt from certain abortion regulations as a group protected by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act—a leaf from the religious right’s book.

In Alaska, on the other hand, a state court judge in 2018 ruled in favor of a Satanic Temple follower who challenged the prayer policy for Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meetings. Borough officials changed the rules and allowed a Satanist prayer in 2019, leading to a walkout.
