Notre Dame football coach said after his team won in overtime over Florida State, "We didn't execute very well tonight. Maybe our team should be executed."
Yup, he certainly did for the most part. Here's the exact quote:
Im a big fan of execution. Maybe our entire team needs to be executed after tonight. - Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly to ABC/ESPN

(1,671 posts)P.S. Thank you for posting the video. It looks as bad as it sounds. He didn't have an "I'm just joshing with you" expression on his face to me.
Edited to add:
OMG! He's only 59. He looks much older.

I mean, most people roll their eyes already, but they keep quiet because it's mostly the kids getting their feathers up. But at some point, the rolled eyes turn into votes.

(32,634 posts)Coach Kelly clearly wasn't happy with how the team played tonight. But he was glad to get the win after all.

(31,996 posts)He was making an on the fly little sarcastic joke. Maybe your husband should get his hearing or something checked.

Oh, and by the way. My husband played college football, was a high school football coach and we have 3 sons that played college football. Neither one of us thought it was appropriate for a head coach to say on national TV.

(14,897 posts)People who have been on their feet for extended periods of time working, talking, stressing can suffer the effects of oxygen starvation. The O2 still goes to the jaw or wherever it is needed, as blood stays in circulation to protect the brain and heart of course, but the sharpness of mind can disappear with the reduced levels. Calling on John McKays quip plus an inability to find the right words in answer to the reporter, ND Coach Kelly appeared to me to be suffering from the condition.

If we like that person. That's different. Then it's others just being to sensitive.

(1,184 posts)As others have pointed out, McKay was once asked in a post-game press conference what he thought of his team's execution, and he said he was in favor of it.
In this instance, Brian Kelly really wanted to say this joke, so he took a long walk to get there and wound up awkwardly shoehorning it in.

"Execution" in football means how well the team performs the plays called.
After a dismal performance, a reporter asked Corso what he thought about his team's execution, to which he replied "I think it's a good idea."

(10,476 posts)It is a quote often attributed to John McKay, the Tampa Bay coach of the 1970s. But others claim it goes back to Lee Corso in Indiana or even back to Casey Stengel in baseball in the 60s.
