New Zealand supermarket chain removed knives and scissors from their shelves after an ISIS supporter stabbed 6 people in one of their stores
New Zealand supermarket chain Countdownn announced Saturday it removed all knives and scissors from its shelves, one day after a man stabbed six people inside one of its stores.
"Last night, we made the decision to temporarily remove all knives and scissors from our shelves while we consider whether we should continue to sell them," Kiri Hannifin, Countdown's general manager for safety, said in a statement.
"This is in no way a reflection on our customers, but an act of support for our team. We want all of our team to feel safe when they come to work, especially considering the events of yesterday," she said."
On Friday, police shot and killed a man who stabbed six people in the Countdown supermarket in Auckland in what authorities described as a terrorist attack by an ISIS supporter.

(17,178 posts)Won't the terrorists just go to the places that still sell knives and scissors? They aren't solving any problems, really, by taking them off the shelves. And is this kind of thing common? It seems like the store is overreacting to an event that might never be repeated.

This is a grocery store and they sales of knives are an ancillary item of their main business. Their concern as expressed is about their workers and customers within their stores as it should be. What happens outside of those locations is not really under the stores control.

I guess grocery stores don't have to sell knives and scissors,; that's not where they make most of their sales. But when I see something like this, it makes me feel like the terrorist won, and that pisses me off. Maybe they can put the sharp objects behind the counter, so they're harder to grab.
