Businesses across the US are struggling to find workers. There were a record 10.1 million job openings in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Many are calling it a job-seekers' market, where, for the first time in years, employees have the upper hand. And some businesses are going to extreme lengths to hire new workers, beyond wage increases, bonuses, and perks.
Amazon, for example, recently recommended that its delivery partners no longer screen would-be drivers for marijuana use. Other retailers say they're so desperate for staff that they're knowingly employing workers that are rude and scare off customers.
"We had a tightening labor market before the crisis, and the war for talent was already picking up," Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton, previously told NBC News. "By both constraining supply and boosting demand, we have put the whole labor market on steroids."

(35,040 posts)I coped with it, I suspect everyone else can too.
These jobs arent worth the emotional labor even if they did pay higher wages

In a lot of jobs, managers and employers have an outsized amount of control over someones livelihood and health insurance. It is not realistic to quit and get another job for most people.
Fuck the cope with it garbage.

(35,040 posts)There was a phase of my life when I was a young adult, I needed a job, any job. I worked on my resume all the time, I had volunteer experience, I lowered my standards, learned interviewing skills, I was going to school, I kept my nose clean, etc.
And you know what I got?
Nothing but dont call us, well call yous and the same email over and over again just with the job title changed I got telling me they were looking for someone else but best of luck in your job search.
I had a family I wanted to make - that wasnt going to happen.
My family thought I was lazy - despite all the sacrifices and willingness I had
All because I wasnt a magical unicorn to these people. So Im enjoying every minute of employers begging people to work for them.

(2,475 posts)Pot smoker? No problem. History of being rude to people? No problem.
You want more money? Absolutely not.
To be fair, I have seen a few employment categories raise wages in my area by anything from a quarter to a dollar an hour for entry level service jobs. So while technically they have raised wages, the wages they are paying are still not livable.

(35,040 posts)I went out of my way to flag job ads that paid minimum wage but also wanted the applicant to have reliable transportation as a must.
For a period of time, there were none of those ads on Craigslist.
Might be time to start doing that again

(3,427 posts)They have signs posted all over their doors that they are hiring with pay starting at $20 an hour plus benefits. Seems like they are desperate for workers.
So much for supply and demand.

(4,868 posts)I've had plenty of "rude" cashiers and retail workers turn around and be chatty when I was polite. If you catch someone who has to deal with covidiots and entitled customers toward the end of their shift, put yourself in their shoes.

(21,719 posts)When the economy is bad, you see a lot of adults, even seniors, and some sharp young people.
When the economy is good, you see a lot of bad attitudes, incompetent workers, inexperienced first time workers.
