Labor Day could exacerbate COVID surge: Experts

As Americans get ready to celebrate the end of summer, health officials are once again urging the public, particularly those who are still unvaccinated, to act responsibly during the Labor Day weekend, given the country's ongoing struggle with the virus.

"First and foremost, if you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House COVID-19 briefing Tuesday.

Holidays, which often entail traveling and large gatherings, have proven to be a catalyst of rapid COVID-19 spread across the country.

Last year, in the weeks prior to Labor Day, the country was experiencing a steady decline in COVID-19 cases, with the national daily case average falling to approximately 38,000.

this past weekend. We had done very well all through 2020 with just about 100% mask compliance, all non essential businesses shut down, etc.

Then when the vaccines showed up they started to act like the pandemic was over, let everything open up and about only 50% of people wearing masks. Huge spike in cases and more people dying than last year.

They announced that they would let people into the Fair for free if they got vaccinated right there at the gate. At first that seemed to me like a good idea and a way to get a lot of young people vaccinated before the schools open tomorrow. Then I realized what would actually happen is it would attract a lot of unvaccinated people to the Fair to mingle with the crowds. These next few weeks are not looking good to me.

They were packing them in for the Arkansas vs. Rice game with no mask or vaccine requirement.
