Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) on Monday preducted the United States will be going back into Afghanistan due to the threat of terror,
After praising former President Donald Trump for maintaining the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, Graham said in an interview on Monday with the BBC that the Taliban will impose a lifestyle on the Afghan people that I think is going to make us all sick to our stomach.
But most importantly, he said, theyre going to give safe haven to Al-Qaeda who has ambitions to drive us out of the Mideast writ large and attack us because of our way of life. We will be going back into Afghanistan as we went back into Iraq and Syria.
Following this statement, BBC host Stephen Sackur asked, You seriously think the United States will once again, in the foreseeable future, put troops back into Afghanistan?

Lindsey sweetie your man crush Donald Trump released 5000 Taliban prisoners or have you forgotten that already.
In the meantime we're going to see a lot of armchair warriors advocating we go back just as many did in the eighties over Vietnam. Remember the movie Rambo starring draft dodger Sylvester Stallone?

Graham on Afghanistan Drawdown
WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) made this statement on troop drawdown in Afghanistan.
Generally speaking I think President Trump has done a very good job handling the conflict in Afghanistan and opening new opportunities between the United States and Pakistan. It is my hope that one day all American forces will be able to return home.
A drawdown to 2,500 counter-terrorism forces may be sufficient but should be conditions-based, to protect Americas interests. I look forward to hearing our commanders views on this matter.
It is imperative, for our own national security, that a counter-terrorism force remains in Afghanistan until conditions warrant their removal. A counter-terrorism force in Afghanistan is an insurance policy against another 9/11.
I am hopeful but very suspicious of any efforts by the Taliban to reject al-Qaeda in any meaningful way. It is not in Americas interests for Afghanistan to sink back into civil war as that is a ripe opportunity for ISIS and al-Qaeda to reemerge in force.

(56,828 posts)we had special forces on the ground in Afghanistan hunting bin Laden. Bush recalled them & gave the Taliban awards for decreasing the heroin trade. 8 months later, 9/11 happened. I wonder if the special forces had gotten bin Laden in those 8 months if it would have stopped 9/11 or delayed the attempt?
I can see a limited special forces operation in Afghanistan again to track down terrorists or similar.
