That was the same as the international worker's day (ie. May 1st - May Day) because the Commies celebrated May Day.

Grover Cleveland, who signed the federal holiday into law, wanted a September date so that it would not be associated with Mayday. Ironically, given the OP, Labor Day is actually the anti-communist day.
