(3,976 posts)These docs are on top of the current treatment standards, and some oddball PCP without privileges at that hospital. Sounds like the guy woke up, ripped the tube out of his own throat, ended up aspirating and now has an aspiration pneumonia, totally unrelated to Covid. Ivermectin is utterly useless in this scenario.

... Pete Lopez of Richmond had been at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land for almost a month battling COVID- ...
His family ... won a court order for the hospital to treat him with the controversial drug ...
"Memorial Hermann is unable to comment on pending litigation or specific cases due to patient privacy laws. It is important to note that physicians diagnose and treat patients consistent with best medical practices. It is the role of medical providers to determine safe and effective courses of treatment for patients, and then assist patients and their loved ones, if applicable, to make informed decisions about treatment options available to them. The FDA has not authorized or approved ivermectin for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19. Data currently available does not demonstrate that ivermectin is safe or effective against COVID-19 infection. Outside of ongoing clinical trials, the FDA, CDC and WHO discourage the use of ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19."

(2,685 posts)A good solid leftie. We got to talking about all those believing in these alternative meds, and about Paul Krugman's opinion piece "The Snake Oil Theory of the Modern Right," about the long history of the right wing's affinity for quack cures.
His RW brother- and sister-in-law are among those who do.
He said they think the FDA is actively denying medication that would save lives, which he says is complicated by the fact that Ivermectin actually has a history of safe human use but only one dose a year. Definitely toxic in larger or more frequent doses.
They are gullible about all these quack meds because they believe the FDA is working hand-in-glove with Big Pharma to boost their profits and preventing people from accessing drugs like hydroxychloriquine and ivermectin. Their inability to trust science and institutions, he thinks, is at its root an assumption that the FDA has been captured by corporate interests. Sad that they don't have the ability to evaluate factual information better!
There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.
