2:56 PM PT -- Wendell Pierce just shared a touching tribute to his friend and former co-star, saying ... "The depth of my love for this brother, can only be matched by the depth of my pain learning of his loss."
Pierce calls Williams an "immensely talented man with the ability to give voice to the human condition portraying the lives of those whose humanity is seldom elevated until he sings their truth." He says Williams was "Always truthful, never inauthentic. The kindest of persons.
"The Wire" star -- who played Det. Bunk Moreland -- also reminisces about their time together on the show, and their famous park bench scene in which Pierce says they "aimed to take that moment in time together and say something about Black men."
Pierce concludes ... "So to you, my brother Mike, there is a small comfort that I know, you knew how much we loved you."

(3,064 posts)1. A great actor. The Wire was obviously his breakout role.
I'd read that he was originally written in for about six episodes but his portrayal of Omar was so excellent they kept him for the full run.
The scene where Avon was in his bar and Wee Bay came back with dinner just in time to realize something was up was probably written in originally for Omar to die in a shootout. He escaped with a bad gunshot wound and instead of dying in Season One he made it to Season Five.
I think The Wire was easily the best TV series ever produced. It had an excellent ensemble cast. But Omar really stood out. A great actor. He'll be sorely missed.

(53,016 posts)2. I agree that it's the best series ever
I think of it as the Shakespeare of our time, and Williams was outstanding in it.
