A prominent South Carolina lawyer whose wife and son were murdered in June was forced to resign from his family's century old law firm after the discovery that millions of dollars were missing from firm accounts just before he was found shot in the head on a lonely country road.

I remember reading about this after the wife and son were killed

For the last two months, South Carolina authorities have been scrambling to figure out who fatally shot Paul Murdaugh and his 52-year-old mother execution-style outside their 1,700-acre Islandton home.
Now, newly released audio and video footage of the deadly, drunken boat crash that had landed the 22-year-old in legal hot water before that incidentalong with a damning petition alleging local law enforcement tried to cover for the prominent familyhave thrust the saga back into the limelight.
Prosecutors allege that on Feb. 24, 2019, Paul drunkenly crashed his dads 17-foot boat holding five other passengers into a bridge after an oyster roast, launching at least three people into the water. Among those who went overboard was 19-year-old Mallory Beach, whose dead body was found a week later by two fishermen about five miles from where the boat crashed.
It did not take long after that disaster for at least some of those with knowledge of it to begin pointing fingersand worrying that justice would be hard-won at best.

And Oops all charges were dropped about two weeks ago. This is just too neat.

(32,061 posts)The whole thing reeks. I can understand why they dropped the charges. It's kind of hard to prosecute a dead person. But, now that this saga has national attention, perhaps we'll actually learn what's really going on. The good ol' boys in local law enforcement are going to have a more difficult time protecting their own with the light shining on them. This whole fucking state is corrupt from top to bottom. Hopefully, all the media attention will expose some of it.

(32,061 posts)There are other dead bodies in the mix, who are not related to this family and their associates. More shit keeps turning up every day. Drugs, embezzelment, vehicular homicide... Lots of people looking for payback.

(7,455 posts)Also like the Charles Stuart case in Boston. Claimed a black man killed his wife while he was slightly injured. This guy was in trouble on many fronts and sounds like and came up with the "perfect" solution. Get rid of the wife and troubled son and make it look like they - and he - were the target of some evil doers. Dumb but not surprising.

(404 posts)It's the social status of the individual that puts this in the news. This guy most likely tried to kill himself after he found out he was caught, but he chickened out and grazed his head to make the story believable. The only reason anyone buys into that theory is so that the family does not come after them. As for the wife and kids, I have not spent much time looking into that, but I find it odd that if someone was hired to kill this guy that they would kill that wife and kid instead. These were very rich and powerful people, heck the driveway to the house looks like a road. Are we supposed to believe that an unknown assassin drove up to that house and shot the first people he saw? BS. Nothing to see here just a messed up rich family with some really serious issues.

(16,920 posts)video someone posted on another thread, but it didnt say there was a gun found. Of course, authorities could be withholding that info. That would be a bizarre way to commit suicide. But him grazing his head would be tricky. Maybe if youre drunk it would be easier to go through with. One wrong flinch and thats it. I wonder if the authorities did a blood alcohol test on him.
But its also hard to imagine a perp could shoot that many times and not kill him.
Edit-and if Murdaugh did try suicide , fake or otherwise, there would be residue on his hand after firing a weapon, but authorities might be withholding that, too.

(404 posts)There is a pretty good timeline on Daily Beast that outlines several events leading up to this event.
About the 7 casings that could mean that 6 were fired in the air and the 7th to make it look like he got hit. Without more information its difficult to know. He would have powder residue on his hands if he was not wearing gloves. Rubber gloves are everywhere these days due to COVID. If he tried to shoot himself I think the wound would probably have gunpowder in or around it.
The DB article refers to an event where young lady was killed in a boating accident. Alex son Paul was charged with BWI and another charge related to the death. Some inference is made that they had enemies as a result of this happening. All hearsay without evidence though, and I doubt much will be released.
Edit: Its also normally easier to escape from Rehab than it is from county jail.
