Update from New Orleans (I would kill for a hot meal)

First, and most importantly, I have had power since Saturday!

I was under a 'boil water' advisory for awhile and seem to have picked up a nasty stomach bug, maybe from the water. I only drank bottled water and I even brushed my teeth with bottled water, but I have been sick as a dog with some stomach thing. Maybe it happened while I was showering? I have never had anything like this. Even plain old water hurts my stomach. I'm trying to reach my doctor, but no luck so far. Perhaps I should try ivermectin. It works on parasites, right?

I was able to pick up a few groceries, but I can't really cook anything. Absolutely everything that was in my refrigerator and freezer had to be tossed out. EVERYTHING. I ate crackers and drank bottled water for an entire week before power was restored. Right now, I would love a cooked meal, even though my stomach couldn't take it. I think I have to stick to crackers and water for awhile (yuck!)

I will probably need a new roof, a few new windows, some interior repairs due to the leaking roof, new siding and new fencing. The insurance claim has been filed and I have applied for a 'blue roof' from the US Army Corps of Engineers. The inside of my house is a mess, especially the floor. I have a lower back injury, so no telling how long it will take to clean everything.

All the kittehs are doing well. Now that I can wash dishes, I am once again serving them canned food and kibble twice a day. I had to suspend the canned food for a week when I had no power. The kittehs were displeased. I'm sure I will get a nasty review on 'Kitteh Yelp.'

My area of Pittsburgh lost power for 2 days back at the end of June. Those 2 days were horrible, but nothing like you're going through. My water was good with no problems and I still had my gas stove for cooking. It was just the electricity and cable that were out.

Our storm was pretty bad, knocking down trees and big branches that brought down power lines. But nobody had their roof blown off or their basement flooded. You guys in New Orleans have a terrible and dangerous situation, with a much longer time for restoration. Prayers for you, my friend.

4. Take care, there's all sorts of nasty bugs ( cholera, worms... ) that can happen after major floods

Check with a doctor or community clinic if you start getting diarrhea. Tummy discomfort may be from plain water and cracker diet, sailors I knew who got 3 days bread and water complained that became an issue after day 2.
If you can mix in a bit of powder drink mix with your water, that might help. Plain water can be harsh unless it's cold with some people when they're dieting or fasting. That's why a lot of restaurants add a slice of lemon or cucumber to their water carafes at the table.
A pinch of ground ginger and sugar also works in my experience when stuck with plain water between paydays.

Good luck, the Kittehs will forgive you. Eventually.

It is anti-bacterial, and when I've had stomach troubles, it has helped. A tablespoon or so a few times a day. Not a solution, but perhaps a stop-gap.

She evacuated up here and is staying with her parents.
She's a pain management physician in a hospital group there.
They headed back down Sunday because power was restored.
She had windows blown in, so I'm guessing there substantial water damage in the house. It was raining sideways when I saw the coverage.
Take care & hopefully things will resolve in a reasonable amount of time.

In my household when someone has gastric issues we cook plain rice with baby carrots. It's good with a little salt or soy sauce.
