This past weekend in South Florida I noticed people waving Brazilian flags from overpasses over I-95.
At first I just figured it was an ordinary show of national pride from the Brazilian community, or maybe there was an upcoming futbol match of which I wasn't aware.
But then I saw the signs below the flags reading, "I stand with Bolsonaro - September 7, 2021" and suddenly it took on a far more darker, Trumpian styled display.
I wasn't aware of any imminent national elections, and when I checked online, indeed they aren't supposed to be taking place until October of next year.
Then this morning I hear about Jason Miller being detained at a Brazillian airport, and now I see that there are mass demonstrations in front of the Brazilian Supreme Court, which has been the main hedge against Bolsonaro's corruption thus far.
All of this seems very weird and off, and the involvement of figures associated with the Former Office Occupant--including Junior himself--now hanging around the Trumpian acolyte Bolsonaro stinks to high heavens.
It's almost as if what some people insisted was going on in Ukraine in 2014--but in reality actually wasn't going on--is actually going on in Brazil in 2021: some sort of shadowy group of Americans fomenting unrest in a foreign country.

(2,261 posts)Lula DeSilva, Bolsonaros liberal opponent and former President, leads the polls in his run against Bolsonaro in next years elections. But I think the demonstration was probably directly related to a soccer game in Rio that was to be played between Brazil and Argentina, and which was suspended when Brazilian health authorities walked on to the field to remove four argentine players, alleging that the four did not comply with Brazilian Covid protocols. The Argentines predictably walked off the field in protest, and a diplomatic and PR scandal ensued.

(2,486 posts)Today is Brazils Independence Day and Bolsonaros supporters are staging massive rallies. Some fear a 1/6 style coup attempt by his supporters. There has been an ongoing feud between Bolsonaro and the Supreme Court.

Critics feared the demonstrations could take a violent turn. Some said they were afraid Bolsonaro could be preparing a tropical version of the Jan. 6 riot in Washington, where supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, alleging he had been robbed of a reelection victory.
Like Trump, Bolsonaro was elected on a pledge to go after a corrupt, entrenched political class. He has also said he might reject the 2022 election results if he loses.
On Monday evening, supporters broke through police lines set up to block vehicles and halt early pedestrian access to the capital's central mall. By morning, dozens of honking trucks were parked on the mall, where only pedestrians were supposed to be allowed. Along the esplanade, there was a festive mood, with cold drinks and the scent of grilled meat.
