"SNIP.....
Brian Stelter: An unvaccinated minority that doesnt watch the news or trust the news is putting the vaccinated majority at undue risk. Theres no way around that reality.
Said Dr. Paul Offit: Its the unvaccinated thats spreading the virus in this country thats infecting others. And that should be what we take on and we should talk about it every minute of every hour of every day because we are never going to get on top of this pandemic until we do that.
Dr. Nicole Saphier: The best path forward that will bring the most amount of happiness and health is if vaccinated adults stop overestimating their Covid risk and unvaccinated adults stop underestimating theirs.

(26,035 posts)I saw an anti-vaxxer on Facebook announce that "from what I can see, only vaccinated people are now getting COVID."

(13,512 posts)My experience that a lot of vaccinated people are severely underestimating their risk, not overestimating it. "I'm vaccinated, so I can just go everywhere maskless" is a very common refrain or way of thinking.

(7,397 posts)There are going to be new variants every few months for years to come, the one Fauci talked about yesterday just emerged from Columbia. We could have a 99% vaccination rate in the US and a new variant emerges from some poor part of the world that evades the vaccine response, its right back to square one. Ill just over it all, we gotta live with it and get on with life.

(7,397 posts)Even though the vaccine still works great at preventing severe illness. Some people may never get past it, theyll be recluses, wearing a mask in their home alone, and well probably hear stories 10 years from now of people that have never left their houses.

More are getting vaccinated, but sad to say not a flood. The intractables doubled down long ago; but we're see more defensive hostility there. What it'd take to make it a flood is something no one should wish for, of course.
And a new poll from the Axios-IPSOS Coronavirus Index found only 1 in 5 Americans, or 20%, say they are not likely to get the vaccine, while "hard opposition," those not at all likely, has dropped to 14% of those adults."

(8,935 posts)62.5% if you count one dose. We're not dealing with some small fringe minority inconveniencing people. That is nearly half our country just being soul-stoppingly stupid.
With numbers like that, they ain't all Trumpers. Makes for good political narrative to pretend they are - and there's no denying they are likelier to be - but we have a serious problem with all this.
And I don't think the media are being particularly helpful.
Why aren't people getting vaccinated? "Because Trump!" only gets you so far. There's a lot more to it.
But we stopped deeply investigating things in the media ages ago. Now it's the simplistic, the headline grabbing, and the comfortable narratives. So, we're not going to be solving this one any time soon.
Buckle up, kids.

(7,408 posts)cruel to us.
They need to be isolated. Vaccine passports needed everywhere inside and out or at least special areas for us to sit - this is outdoors. Indoors - passports only.
You just can't trust these people. My church is back to insisting on masks inside but, watching online, I saw the rule is not being closely followed.
Several "wear" a mask going in then flip in half way down when they are inside, some kids didn't have one on at all. There is still much singing and Communion on the tongue is allowed again yet wanting to be nice and fair - nothing is said.
They, figuratively, pee all over the community and there is no penalty..

(182,273 posts)I caught her on Fox News over the last few days (always always has her newest book prominently displayed behind her) and she never fails to play every side of the binary issue. Its literally confusing as to what she is advocating. But shes pretty and her name sounds like a stripper so the old Fox News viewers will follow whatever she sort says to them.

(50,773 posts)NYC employees are required to be vaccinated. I am guessing that as soon as the vax is approved for children, all NYC school children will get a deadline by which time they must be vaccinated.
This is what we need to do. Exclude the unvaccinated from the public square. Private businesses should require vax proof for grocery stores, restaurants, all public gatherings.
Most importantly, they should be excluded from ICUs and if they are in the hospital and the hospital fills, they should be sent to warehousing facilities where they are fed and bedded and allowed to run out the course of their disease. We need to free the beds for the vaccinated, both those who contract Covid and those who need other essential procedures.
People will tell me that last is very cruel. But it isn't. It is less cruel than being the ones responsible for all those hospital beds filling up in the first place.
Our hand-wringing over them only feeds their sickness. They love it. It encourages them. We need to stop.
We need to start treating them like people who are willfully spreading a deadly disease through the population.

(17,305 posts)I never see a middle age man, and few middle aged women wearing masks.
As far as a majority of my neighbors are concerned, Covid is not something to worry about.
One county to my East is the home of FSU. At the football game on Sunday, it was hard to spot a mask in the crowd in a State where less than 43% of the people have been vaccinated. Football season is going to challenge ICUs.

(17,305 posts)It was apparent in DeSantis' claim that the vaccine did not attain herd immunity, as promised. (The implication was that it is ineffective and not worthwhile) It would be a disaster for the Republican Party if Covid was brought under control. They need more people to die under Biden's watch than under Trump's.

It's so dumb. It's not his fault all these idiots are refusing to wear masks or get vaccinated.
