A rhinoceros at Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium briefly escaped its enclosure Tuesday afternoon.
Keepers spotted Jontu, an Indian rhino, outside his enclosure in the Asian Highlands area about 1 p.m., said Dan Cassidy, the zoos vice president of animal management.
Jontu, who is 13, was grazing in a behind-the-scenes area outside of the rhino barn for about 40 minutes, Cassidy said.
After zoo staff spotted him, zoogoers were asked to leave the area or shelter in buildings. The zoos carousel and aviary were cleared of guests in case the rhino took a path toward those spaces.

If it had been an African rhino, they were in for some real trouble. I have fed Indian rhinos with my hand. I wouldnt go within 200 meters of a loose African rhino.

(118,643 posts)3. I saw an Asian rhino at the Toronto Zoo. A dump truck was driving by
in the background and it thought it was an interloper and went charging. Huge animal. Much bigger than i ever expected. Really tall too - like 7 or 8 feet high. Glad all are okay.
