ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Imagine needing to call 911 but no one picks up or being put on hold. Thats what people in Albuquerque claim theyve experienced. It was Monday morning at the Four Hills Mobile Home Park, when a resident, who asked to remain anonymous, saw the 88-year-old community pool attendant get attacked by six teenagers. "They just started pushing him, shoving him, she said. They tried to climb back over the fence, so he went up to the fence and they grabbed him through the fence and started punching him."
Worried for his life, she called 911 but became livid when no one answered. "It rang and then it was just dead. So I tried again, same thing, she said. She said she called three separate times with no luck. "It was a horrible feeling not able to get a hold of someone because that is supposed to be your lifeline. A manager at the mobile home park said they called the non-emergency line for 30 minutes before someone picked up, and then two hours later police arrived, with the teenagers getting away. "We've had issues with 911 in the city before and it needs to be fixed, said the witness.
A distressing issue, small shop owner Carol Johnson said she is familiar with. "To the point where a lot of us don't call anymore, that's why we have everything locked up like this." Her shop has been broken into several times before, and she claimed police have never investigated.
KOB 4 reached out to the Albuquerque Police Department for comment regarding people being placed on hold or not able to speak with an operator when they call 911.
They said they are looking into it.

(31,319 posts)It's been all over the news. For a while, the Raleigh center was picking up Durham calls. Then that stopped.
Last I'd seen, they had about 25 vacancies in staffing.

I just hope they answer if I ever have to call. I did call Orange County 911 about 4:30 am one August morning in 2007 when I discovered our house in Chapel Hill was on fire. The first truck was there within 5 minutes and eventually there were 59 fire fighters from three counties fighting the fire and trying to keep it from spreading on our hillside, wooded lot. It had been very hot and dry that year, with leaves already starting to fall. They contained it and kept the entire house from burning down. We lost just about everything. Miraculously, several photo albums survived with pictures of the kids when they were little. There were some other things salvaged, but basically everything was gone and the house had to be demolished. If they hadn't answered the phone immediately, I suspect there would only have been a pile of ashes because the house was built of wood and it went up like a tinderbox in no time at all.

(3,334 posts)Anyone who wanted to be a 911 operator had to pass a test. It was a standardized test. No one who wanted the job could pass it, I think the high score was in the 50% range. Not one person came back at a future time to retake it. I think they just realized how difficult the job is. Just to make sure it was passable, I gave the test to 5 police officers who had never seen the test. The low score for them was over 90%. If I had taken the test without any previous knowledge of it I would have been hard-pressed to pass it. The job might be easier now with the latest computer systems.

(15,800 posts)Theyre seriously short staffed. And the number of calls has increased dramatically year over year.
