(92,062 posts)emphasis on a lot of anti-Newsom pieces, and the polls have been all over the place.
They are quiet now, but they were pushing how turnout wouldn't be good, using the past to justify that, and implying that favors the recall.
From preliminary data it shows that this will be a large turnout election, and Democrats are turning out.
What many seem to be forgetting is that every registered voter gets a postage paid mail-in ballot, and that there is something like 45% registered Democrats to 23% registered republicans, and the no party preference are split down the middle. That along with the fact that Democrats represent the large population centers, and as long as people vote we should be fine.
Take nothing for granted, but the republicans have just wasted the state 250 million dollars

(58,785 posts)because they have been (unless I know otherwise), but it's nice to have the situation laid out like this. These are such crazy times, though. That a despicable creep like Elder could be even within shouting distance reminds me of tRump this time in 2016.
As long as people vote.
I read that the Democratic Socialists of America back Newsom and call for a no on recall. The Socialist Equality Party also calls for no on recall but is running a socialist candidate. He calls Newsom a "right wing corporate stooge" who supports Biden's (?!) murderous Covid policy. And the "fraudulent socialists" of the DSA stooges for the Dems.

(13,912 posts)you mention, while idiots, pretty much have zero influence. Its the right wing fascists that we need to worry about. That said, Id be very surprised if Elder manages to sneak in. As long as Dems dont get complacent, we should be ok.

(58,785 posts)And the RW is THE huge threat.
But it did cause me to remember 2016 and wonder what choices any who would vote to throw away have. Influence rises from "pretty much zero" to meaningful when electoral margins are extremely narrow.
Fwiw, although a lot of...turbulent sorts flooded into the DSA in 2015-16, this position suggests more sensible and rational people have regained control. I don't know. I thought there were some thoughtful people there and tried to join once so I could read their discussion about socialism, but they wouldn't have me. This was before the influx of those who thought they should "lock her up!" after the revolution. (Imagine -- they'd have them but not me.)
Just looked up the Green candidate, as another throw-it-to-the-GOP choice. He's a former pornography editor who wanted to run in the recall election of 2003 but didn't want to anger his boss, Larry Flynt, who was running. Can't make this stuff up.

Don't stay home or you will regret it.

(6,019 posts)The local news runs too many stories about Elder, without ever pointing out what a sociopathic, misogynistic dick he is. I can't imagine one of these idiots being my governor.
