My cousin's wife just went on a ventilator. Here's the worst part. She's a damn nurse. But they live in Georgia, are hard core Trumpists, and never got vaxxed. It's breaking my heart because IT WAS PREVENTABLE, and obviously now it's too late for him to get vaxxed.
But now is not the time for recriminations, now is the time to support my family member. But I'm so pissed off I can hardly see. It's all so unnecessary. Do I have to mention how much I HATE TRUMP right now?

(16,829 posts)I wish she had relied on her training to decide about the vaccine.

(12,351 posts)Even clinically training is rationalized by his false rhetoric...I am lost for a way to reverse this brainwashing in healthcare workers.

(7,838 posts)There are no trumpers in my family regarding Covid. but on plenty of other issues i am bluer than most.
I appreciate the dilemma of talking or silence.

It's tragic on so many levels.

(10,828 posts)Reaction? What a pointless waste to throw your life away for an ideology and/or grifter like Donald Trump. It's hard to have empathy for these decisions but I did feel a certain softening for those who at the end of it, reached out, admitted they were wrong and warned others who might listen: Don't repeat my mistake.
Sorry this happened within your own family. I, too, have a cousin, a diehard MAGAT, who spends her days on FB mocking the virus and those of us who rushed out to get vaccinated. Makes me angry but also sad. We spent our summers together as kids. How do people become so deluded? My only conclusion is that well before Covid, they were poisoned by nonstop propaganda, hate-mongering and fear, so that they no longer trusted their best instincts (or like your cousins's wife--her education), and only hear what a bunch of charlatans spout.
Mind-boggling!

(30,613 posts)If they have any kids, I feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for all the patients your cousin's wife likely infected.
I do not feel sorry for her, nor for your cousin. She got what they both deserved.

(3,056 posts)Or the rest of his family. Their kids are grown, but they do have grandkids...in fact, one was just born in the last couple of months, so there's been lots of up close and personal contact lately. I hope everyone's immune system is up to it. It's all just so damn unnecessary.

(3,056 posts)I just thought it didn't do any good if you've already been exposed, since the Moderna & Pfizer take about a month to get you where you need to be. Hopefully the J&J will boost his family's immunity with the one shot. We're all holding our breath.
Have I mentioned lately how much I hate (As our friend "The Ferret" refers to him) Cheeto Mussolini?

(44,973 posts)If they are not infected, then vaccination is a good idea. Monoclonal antibodies might be a good idea-they can be given to someone exposed or infected if this person is high risk for developing complications.

(14,490 posts)and unfortunately we don't yet have mechanisms in place to start the healing. I really worry about our collective mental health.
It's simply right-wing divide and conquer at work, and it's working every day.
So sorry you're having to suffer this loss of family bonds. I suspect almost every American has in some form. I have, both with family and friends.
I truly hope you find your road to peace. I would go nuts if not for Mother Nature, music, meditation, helping others and healthy connections to a few people such as my adult kids and the folks on DU.
Big DU hugs and compassion go out to you today......

(3,110 posts)Except for the fact my 86yo uncle is a member of the Baptist church leadership. He is in Grorgia and in the hospital fighting for his life as I type this.
Have enough people not DIED already? Holy smokes this just never ends.
Edited to say I feel your pain, and I'm sorry for what you (we) are going through.
