What is the Nipah virus and why is it more deadly than COVID?

Officials in India are racing to contain a virus outbreak that has claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy and is deadlier than COVID-19 — the Nipah virus.

CBS News reports the boy was taken to the hospital last week in the southern Kerala state with a high-grade fever and suspected brain inflammation. After blood tests, he was diagnosed with the Nipah virus and died Sunday.

What is the Nipah virus?

The Nipah virus was first discovered in Malaysia and Singapore in 1999 after multiple pigs and people became sick, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far, the only recorded outbreaks have occurred in Asia.

So what? Look, there are hundreds of viri, bacteria, and venoms that are deadlier than covid.

Yet the author wants us to be concerned about one that has been around for over 30 years and has only a small death count.

Sure, if you get it, it will suck. But getting it is the issue. If you get held under water for a few minutes, that will suck also.

Don't they have anything better to write about?

I once saw a episode about it on Discovery Channel.

But the episode did not say that it was first discovered in domestic pigs, which is more concerning than fruit bats.

Fruit bats contaminate fruit and people consume fruit. The virus can be contracted and spread by domestic animals.

No need to panic in the US, but it is a concern

And, more importantly, one of the virus's the Government scientist who designed the Covid vaccine was working on. They were getting ready to go to trials on a vaccine when Covid hit.

Nearly 100 %, going by memory. About half die, and those that survive have brain damage.

Lednicky hopes that U.S. can learn from the COVID-19 pandemic and take on a more proactive approach versus a reactive one.
