I wonder why the Soviet Union's Afghan government lasted longer?

We’ve had a couple of people here today very upset and sad about leaving our “afghan friends” behind. I mean they can’t articulate exactly who they mean, or if those people actually wanted to come to the US, but hey, it makes for good internet fodder…I guess.
