Mussolini's fascism and Franco's seem to have arisen from breakdowns in society and failures of their democratic systems...which seems ominous, and perhaps makes your point, as the divisions and havoc the pandemic is having in our society is quite troubling.

(24,587 posts)and actually have been for, like, 50 years! (graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1977) that there is absolutely NOTHING to distinguish Americans from 1930s Germans, and their ilk.
I am also convinced there are MAGATs among us who would not shrink from - would actually enjoy - seeing their fellows taken down by any means available. We are experiencing this in real time with the anti-vaxxers, those who won't wear masks and obstruct others - including our CHILDREN - from doing so!
They are sick, pathological, sadists. No doubt about it.

(53,467 posts)society makes it easy to "other-ise" Blacks, Browns, gays, Democrats, the disabled, women...troubling times ahead.
Getting the infrastructure bills passed is critical for us to keep our majorities in Congress, otherwise I'm afraid it'll be a slide into fascism 'R us. We're teetering on the brink.

(21,527 posts)Well before taking power, every well-known fascist head of state - Hitler, Mussolini, Pinochet, Videla, Suharto, Marcos, etc. - enjoyed big business backing, and by extension much of their countries' corporate media.

We are definitely on the brink of fascism, having lived with it for
four years, and we are also going through a LOT of death and suffering.
