seems to be legal to gerrymander these days for republicans, so dems not doing it seems like some sort of suicide IMO. repubs are not interested in neutral commissions that surrender their power. repubs are in it to win seats

(4,223 posts)it's hard to tell morals from pragmatism. They've decided to grab the power and I am cynical we have the evolved pushback necessary to counter. They're cheating like there's no tomorrow and we're still trying to play fair. Okay, then.

(32,992 posts)because that is the honorable way to handle it.
of course, in a majority-Dem state like WA, this ends up giving the GQP an outsized voice which they have clearly demonstrated they don't deserve.
OK, admittedly, 3 of our GQP Congressional Reps did vote to impeach the 2nd time around...

2 - Many of the ones that we DO control
we dont control the redistricting because we turned it over to an independent commission or committee.

(3,796 posts)in 2018 we took 11 House seats that should have went to the Rethugs (87% of the seats with only 66% of the votes). 2020 is was down to 7 extra seats (79% of the seats with only 66% of the votes). We have similar numbers in the state legislature. We've stacked and cracked them almost completely out of political power here in the Golden State. The downside is the few red districts are so stacked to the right that Devin Nunes and Kevin McCarthy have super safe seats and keep getting sent to Washington.

(12,106 posts)When I'm home... I Live in Ca-25 and I've lived there for 40 years.
Used to be a blood red District until it was re-districted years back. They broke the District in half and diluted CA-25 with "Bluer" votes from LA County. And CA-26 swallowed the other half of the old 25, diluting the old District with "Bluer" votes from Ventura County, Oxnard, etc.
Personally... I encourage it. It's a blue state, let ALL the seats be blue.
Note: STILL pissed about the GOP'er who won Katie Hills seat.

(52,130 posts)assuming that people are distributed evenly across the state. Once one party is getting 2/3 of the vote it is fairly reasonable that they would win nearly all the seats.

(26,697 posts)If you look at Barbara Lee's district around Oakland, there isn't much that can be done to change the fact that it's 80% blue ("wasting" loads of votes).
