At her weekly press conference, Speaker Pelosi reminded Republicans that the debt ceiling increasing they are opposing is to pay off the $7 trillion in debt that Trump ran up.

......

Speaker Pelosi said:

I don’t know how we got the custom of having to deal with it each year because it is controversial. Amassing over $7 trillion in debt, and that’s what this debt ceiling lift is paying for. People say oh you want to spend money. No, we’re paying the credit card, the Trump credit card with what we would do to lift the debt ceiling. And President Trump, when he was president, we, Democrats, supported lifting the debt ceiling because it’s the responsible thing to do. I would hope the Republicans act in a similarly responsible way.

Is one of those arcane old rules like the filibuster. Republicans love it because they get to whine and grandstand about other people getting help. Dems should get rid of it.

I was wrong. They started complaining about "Biden's national debt" immediately after the election. I guess it was a preemptive strike.

The GQP says the Dems are "Tax-and-spend." True. We believe in paying as we go. Robert Heinlein put it this way: "Pay cash or do without. [A]wareness of debt eats up domestic felicity.”

The Repugs believe in "borrow and spend." They make their money by using OPM (other people's money), and so long as they're advancing their corporate overlords' goals they will spend money they don't have. They are the "Party of No," and they will not spend a penny toward making the average citizen's life better, no matter how much it improves the general welfare. Hell, if the Democrats proposed it they'd be against a "Welcome Back" party for Jesus Christ.

Isolationist Republicans were concerned that President Wilson would get us into another war following WW I so they devised the debt ceiling to prevent Wilson from spending more than what the Republicans authorized in the budget. There is nothing in the Constitution about having a debt ceiling yet it is political suicide to call for it to be abolished. No other nation grapples with a debt ceiling.
