Unmasked Manchester (Michigan) students enter building in protest of mandate
Video on social media (they so proud of themselves):

The school's approach - very reasonable, really. Far more so than I felt, seeing the video of parents encouraging a bunch of teenagers to go ahead and possibly infect, maybe kill their friends.

The unmasked students, however, were not allowed into any classrooms and were sent into a separate, isolated part of the building where they completed work for the day.
It did get vocal and students did begin pressing against the door for entry without masks, obviously not being compliant, Bezeau said. I wouldnt want to block students or anything like that, so thats certainly how they got past us, but we were doing our due diligence and making sure that they understood that entering the building without a mask isnt in compliance.

I think part of the issue is the expectation that once we issued orders we were going to be standing outside ticketing people - thats just not how it happens. Does the authority exist and can we move forward with it? Yes. Is it going to be an instantaneous process? Its not.
Public health orders are a civil issue that the health department -- not the sheriffs office -- can cite people in violation of, Washtenaw County Sheriffs Office Spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

(164 posts)Not to mention being hounded to "take a stand" by someone's dad carries none of the sense of purpose when students actually organize to protest something they find worthy. The video kind of shows they knew they were props. The parents involved are now the focus on social media, and the kids got to spend the day isolated. Yay?

(16,859 posts)The sheriff needs to remove a student IF the school requests it. Am i wrong?

(164 posts)At least, that is how I understand it, based on the linked article. It seems like the principal didn't want to escalate to the furthest extreme immediately. The unmasked students were isolated for the day. I'll be following the story to see what happens next.

(52,152 posts)if those people had been black teenagers refusing to abide by a dress code, that cop would have arrested them so fast your had would have spun.
A_Woman_from_MI
(164 posts)It almost goes without saying.
The linked article suggests the sheriff in attendance was not empowered to arrest anyone, the agency of enforcement is the health department and they are authorized to issue citations (I assume with fines), but a minority district would have included a larger LEO presence, no doubt, and reasons for arrest (and I shudder to think what else) would have been found. I appreciate no violence took place. I wish it was always the case.
