but not a good strategist. That title would fall to U.S. Grant or Winfield Scott who developed the Anaconda Plan.

A charge across open field against an entrenched enemy with the high ground and crossfire lines? Really dumb. And, Longstreet knew it.
He repeated the same mistake around 6 months later.
So, I'm not convinced he was all that good a tactician, either. (You're spot on about his strategy. Invading the north was monumentally stupid.)
If McClellan hadn't been such an officious twit or Burnside hadn't been such an incompetent buffoon, the war wouldn't have lasted 18 months.

It's like the former guy totally forgot who was running things last year, and why didn't that guy do more than make the rubble bounce in Afghanistan with his mother of all bombs?

he still believes he's deserving to have one of himself planted on a pedestal and, with each removal, it's dawning on him that the likelihood of this is dwindling.

In his mind, he sees Marine Two high up on concrete with his bulbous body emerging. Horse? He don't ride no stinkin' horse!

He would have left scorched earth and no effective resistance behind.

Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas involved little fighting but large-scale destruction of cotton plantations and other infrastructure, a systematic policy intended to undermine the ability and willingness of the Confederacy to continue fighting.

American could have won in Afghanistan, but we'd have had to pretty much destroy it, and slaughter nearly all the (male) inhabitants. It's not like we don't have the capacity; we don't have the will.

Nor should we.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(punishment)

It was a military punishment where you had to kill 1/10th of your cohort for failure or insubordination.

Warfare in the Ancient World involved wholesale slaughter and enslavement. There was no one left to resist.

the economic/social deprivations that fostered WW-II.

At least the west and the Marshall Plan in Europe and rebuilding in Japan were recognized as being vital for future stability.

The US pull-out from Vietnam was ameliorated since the Chinese really needed a stable state in the south.

Not sure how the Chinese and USSR will react to the defeat of the western (US) and rapid withdrawals. Probably with glee and gluttony.
