General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe sad reality of life in 2021 - COVID - "we are so over that - it is boring". Climate change - "
nothing we can do about it" or "that again? boring - yesterday's news" - or "hurricane? earthquake? it doesn't impact me - I am sure it is getting dealt with - boring".
I guess that human beings are, largely (of course there are exceptions - I expect the vast majority of us here at DU), doomed to fail due to short attention span theater, addiction to conspiracy and snake oil, and propensity to get bored pretty fast and move on.
Unfortunately - we live in a time of complex problems that need focus, patience, and time (and money -but what is going on is inconvenient to big money's profits, so there). We need to understand that the world is connected - and we are acting that it is just all about ME.
We will "bored" ourselves right into our own demise.
Disgusted.

(24,522 posts)I remember a discussion I had with my 6 year-old grand whose 1st grade teacher was sending notes home about her not paying attention and being disruptive. I tried to discuss the excitement of learning, but she said "I just want to have fun." Most of us outgrow that (she did) but some never do. We are seeing it with people out in huge crowds at ball games, concerts, etc. during a highly contagious pandemic. Freedumb!
Even here on DU, there are many threads complaining that President Biden hasn't fixed this or that, not seeming to realize the vast number of complex problems he is dealing with, and with hold-overs from trump gumming up the works.
Climate change is huge; it will take patience, expertise from the scientific community, and an enormous effort to blunt the lobbyists and republicans in Congress. We need to all be committed to the challenge. How we change the attitudes of our selfish fellow citizens is beyond me.
Disgusted is right.

(100,033 posts)It happened in 1790, it happened in 1890, it happened in 1918, it happened in 1950, and it's happening now. The thing is COVID is going to become endemic whether we want it to or not. The biggest problem right now is the idiots who won't get vaccinated. But even that's nothing new.
The only thing that's different between past pandemics and now is that we have social media. And people's addiction to social media is literally killing them. And it's also making them make dumb choices, like not getting the vaccine.

(7,404 posts)The human race is fairly resilient, short of worldwide nuclear war or a giant asteroid/comet impact or something well be around for a long time yet. COVID certainly isnt going to end the world, especially with modern vaccine technology.

(33,240 posts)Sorry. I wish it was fucking over. It just grinds on and we vaccinated have to suck it up and tolerate selfish adult oppositional defiance disorder memes and feel sorry for unvaxxed blockheads who clog up ICUs. I'm sick of wearing a mask in a city that is 80% vaccinated.
I am bored with Climate Change. I am bored with the Denialist's obstruction and enraged it works. It isn't clever and it isn't funny and it keeps derailing any rational action.
Perhaps we are acting as if it is just all about ME because RW propaganda has pushed a divisive, selfish, greedy Individualism for 40 years.

(60,006 posts)backs (if not both) - there is no common working group all pulling together for the betterment of us all.
Then again, I am an idealist, and typically an optimist, but am getting worn down myself.
