"SNIP......
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and his staff have been engaged for weeks in intensive negotiations with the chairs of key Senate committees ahead of his partys release of a sprawling bill to expand the social safety net, laying down his demands on a wide-range of issues: health care, education, child care and taxes, CNN reports.
And Manchin is making clear he wont cave on aggressive climate provisions sought by many Democrats, throwing a wrench in his partys efforts to make the bill key to combating global warming.

(118,635 posts)the western US very much drier and people and agriculture are going to have to adapt. Does he know this? So all americans are going to be adapting and it will be glaringly obvious in elections to come. Does he think Democrats are not going to talk about it? Or that people are not going to notice the disasters that surround them? And Red State people are not going to be in a bubble on this topic. It will pop.

(118,635 posts)or be inundated by climate changes in the US depending on whether you live in the Western USA or thr Eastern USA, south included. Agriculture and cities and towns will change. The Fox bubbleworld they live in will burst.

(3,322 posts)That's West Virgnia. A state that went +40 for Trump. (I don't know the actual number but it is crazy whackadoodle Red like that) Without Manchin nothing NOTHING Biden wants to do would get done. But with that being said, I sure as hell hope that after 2022 The Dems have +52 so Manchin can go to hell with his vote after that!!!!
I say pass whatever we can get now (looks like $2.5 trillion combined both bills is what we are looking at) and then after that GOTV the fucking vote for the Dems in 22 and then go scorched earth with a progressive agenda with +52 D Senators and the D House. Manchin Sinema be damned!! (hopefully we can get a new D Senator from CA via resignation or primary as well since she seems on the fence with reforming the filibuster)
As frustrating as it is to have Manchin dragging his feet on Biden's agenda, without him nothing gets done. We F'd up earlier in WI, PA, NC, ME, and IA for not getting a D Senator in from those states. I mean seriously WI. Johnson twice!!?? And Collins in ME again!!?? And sexting in NC..?? Ya, those races f'd us. And yet, we are still lucky to have a D in West Virginia as sucky as it is. Oh and by the way, THANK YOU Georgia!!! And JFC, thank you, thank you, thank you McConnell is NOT the Majority leader!!!

(43,333 posts)contains only 550 billion in new spending. H ealready heped cut almsot 80% if the new spending from the bipartisan bill.
Biden's proposals totalled to 6.1 trillion usd (in new spending, inclusive of 400 billion usd in clean energy tax incentives) between the 2 bills.
The tax incentives were all removed from the bipartisan bill, as was a shedload of Biden's agenda.
IF Manchin gets his way, the total in new spending will be around 1.5 to 2 trillion usd, a massive drop from 6.1 trillion.

as for this
good luck fighting:
the historical tides of Dem POTUS first midterms (the last 2 were unmitigated disasters)
+
the 7 to 12 net seats we will lose in the House simply from post 2020 Census redirecting
+
the wave of voter suppression laws that will come, are coming already, and we cannot even pass the 2 vital voters protection bills because of Manchin and Sinema refusing to even modify the filibuster
+
not being able to run on a large, large part of Biden's agenda (IF Manchin and Sinema end up shredding massive parts, which they already have helped to do on the bipartisan bill)
+
The Senate map is hardly a slam dunk to go + 2 net
we have 4 at risk seats (GA, NH, AZ, NV)
the Rethugs have 3 (open seat in PA, open seat in NC, and WI, regardless of if that POS Johnson retires or not)
plus a very iffy reach race in FL
Manchin and Sinema do not even run for re-election (if Manchin even does) for over 3 more years, yet they are in the process, so far, of shitting all over Biden's agenda, the Party's agenda favoured by the vast, vast majority of the entire Dem caucus, and our chances in 2022.
Neither is even likely to win in 2024, Manchin has been outflanked on both the left AND the right by Justice in a hugely Red state, and Sinema is, atm, cruising to be defeated in a Dem primary (her numbers are in the shitter compared to Kelly, her Senate Dem AZ partner).

(43,333 posts)he is tossing a spanner on the works on most anything green. He and Sinema already helped to crush most of the green things in the bi-partisan bill.
He and Sinema already helped strip out almost 80% of all the new spending in the bipartisan hard infrastructure bill
Biden wanted $2.6 trillion new spend ($2.2 trillion for programmes and $400 billion in tax credits to fight global climate change)
the bill ended up at $550 billion new spend, and ALL tax credits removed

these pie charts alone show the level of gutting
The Infrastructure Plan: Whats In and Whats Out (it's brutal)

(15,601 posts)Even on the original CNN report, I can find no list, just some second hand accounts of general areas Manchin is supposedly concerned about- no direct quotes from Manchin except on fossil fuels.
Good rule of thumb:
Dont listen to what Manchin (or anonymous leakers, who could be fossil fuel lobbyists claiming to know his priorities) says, watch what he does, which so far is nothing. Schumer will bring the completed draft of the bill to the floor for debate and amendments soon, and then Manchin will be on the hot seat to put up or shut up.

(24,412 posts)We don't do anything, things (probably) get worse, and then a few years down the line, after Manchin is out of office and writing his memoirs (if he's still alive and there are other people still alive to care about what he has to say), he will be writing his mea culpas and going on talk shows talking about how he's tearfully regretful about not only NOT doing something but that he STOOD IN THE WAY OF other people doing something when he had the chance to be helpful. And the news media, of course, will fawn over his courage to admit that he was wrong- when the damage has already been done.
I wish this all wasn't making me so damned cynical.
