Deputy Mayor of N.Y. Town Had 17 Illegal Guns in His Home
Brian Downey, the deputy mayor of Airmont, N.Y., was arrested on federal and state gun charges after authorities found an arsenal of weapons.
Brian Downey, the deputy mayor of a village located about an hours drive north of New York City, was arrested last week after an early morning court-ordered search of his residence turned up what the authorities said was an arsenal of weapons.
There were guns hanging from one wall, guns on a rack against another wall and a sawed-off shotgun in a nearby closet, according to a federal complaint that cited a gun room in Mr. Downeys ground-level basement.
------------------
During the search of Mr. Downeys house, in Airmont, N.Y., the authorities also seized a lockbox containing fake credentials from the F.B.I. and other law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States Marshals Service, one of the complaints said.
Some of the fake credentials had Mr. Downeys photograph, and the authorities also found four F.B.I. patches that could be sewn to a uniform, the complaint said.

No parties mentioned anywhere - don't know if these guys are D's or R's. But I really hope they aren't D's.

(43,024 posts)Alarming that this could go undetected for so long. What's with all the FBI badges? Investigating something, or someone? Are there unauthorized investigatory agents among us? Does this clown have any ties to legitimate authorized constabulary forces?

(7,510 posts)Downey won office running with the now-Mayor Nathan Bubel and Trustee Migdalia Pesante, who soon split from Downey and Bubel after taking office. The three first-time candidates defeated incumbent Mayor Philip Gigante and trustees Paul Marchesani and Anthony Valvo of Preserve Airmont with the strong support of the village's growing Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish voters
In the 2021 election, the trend continued as Shimon Moses and Isaac Weiss, both backed by the Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish voters, won the election for four-year terms. They defeated Andrew Dispensa and Jennifer Groff, as two Preserve Airmont trustees, Kevin Warbrick and Peter Blunnie, didn't seek re-election.

But he looks like bad news according to this webpage.

(34,159 posts)Mr. Walshs office said it learned of the purchase of the silencer after being alerted by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents about the devices delivery to Mr. Downeys house.
There was a gun magazine that carried an ad for a Drop In Auto Sear and my friends and I thought it was a sting.

(36,238 posts)Even in the states where it's legal, you have to fill out the appropriate paperwork, pay the $200 stamp tax and then wait for the FBI to conduct a through background check on you before the company will ship the suppresser.
I suspect the guy did all the above but the fact that he lived in a state where it's illegal to own such a device is what triggered the investigation.
