...her son's life would have been in just as much danger, and probably more, under the Former Office Occupant.

If Trump had followed through with withdraw, it would have been bound to be a disaster. Or if he reneged on it, our troops would still be in danger over there.

Yes, the deaths of the 13 servicemen and several dozen civilians was undeniably tragic, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking there was some better way around it.

Unfortunately, Ms. McCullum is Exhibit A to the dangers of blinding partisanship and cult-of-personality politics.

Partisanship and ideology is above all. For this reason, the militaristic tone needs to shut down and the worship of the uniform needs to stop. But as we all know, military service only matters when the professional right wants it to.

And the Commander-in-Chief, regardless of party, predictably might end up being a target of ire--rightfully or wrongly--of the loved ones of a fallen service person simply because he or she is the one who made the final order.
