(3,229 posts)My relative works for a right-wing company that probably wouldn't mandate vax. However, his daughter "mandated" that he couldn't visit the new grandchild, and he furiously refused.
Someone who would alienate his child and grandchild would probably willingly get fired.
If you love your "freedumbs" more than life itself, what's a job or grandkid, after all?

(3,229 posts)I think the "hesitant" will grouse and get the shot, blaming the boss. That's fine.
The truly resistant will probably hold out, but I do think they're just a very loud small minority. They're also horrifying because they seem to be so self-destructive. But I don't think my relative and the other resistors are a very large proportion.

Not wanting to follow company rules and health/safety protocols probably isn't a valid reason.

(31,805 posts)When a person gets fired UC dispute judges look at the conditions of employment at the time of initial hire. Changing of rules negates that and in most states they will be ruled eligible. But don't listen to me, go with twitter. The fountain of all knowledge many seem to assume.

(11,095 posts)Most of the places where I held jobs the UCs were not real big about carving out exceptions and rationale for voluntary exit. And if I recall - the union reps were saying pretty much the same thing.
(I will however concur on the 'sourcing' for some of this information. Got something better than a twitter account?)

(12,134 posts)You cant tell the employer, Sorry, I dont like washing hands, so Im going to ignore it,' she said.
And if someone is fired for breaking workplace policies, that can be a problem if they file for unemployment.
If an employee says, I dont want to get vaccinated, and theyre fired for it theyre being fired for cause, Reiss said. Thats generally a barrier to collecting unemployment benefits.

(21,146 posts)all the time. Many companies have employee handbooks in hard copy and online. Employees can keep updstrd on any changes. If they leave the job because they disagree with the changes, they will need to have good reasons for disagreeing in order to be eligible for unemployment in most states. "Good reasons" will be determined by EC judges and will vary from one state to another.

Time to instill a little fear into their small, misinformed minds. Shaming them into doing the right thing doesn't work, apparently. "Scaring them" Maybe worth a try.

But Im thinking the kind of people who refuse to get vaccinated might not be aware of this and will be easily busted when they try to get by with a counterfeit cardboard card.
I hope, anyway.

(45,261 posts)Several red states are working on laws on this. Montana already banned vaccine discrimination. Employers can choose to fight against unemployment benefits or do nothing.
It's up to a lot of individual factors.

(15,394 posts)I was lead attorney for the Unemployment office in my state for 20 years. I literally wrote the UI rules for the Department. While I'm retired now, they did bring me back last summer and fall due to the excessive case load.
While all state's laws on UI are "different", UI is unlike any other state agency in that the Feds can shut down a state's program, or dramatically increase the unemployment tax employers have to pay, if the state doesn't meet certain requirements. They call it a "federal/state agency". The laws differ only slightly and believe me, I've read the law and rules in many states.
Some states give no UI benefits if you quit. Most states allow it if you quit for good cause or if you are fired without cause. Quitting because you won't get the vaccine or being fired for not getting the vaccine = no UI benefits.
During the pandemic, if you quit your job because you were afraid of getting Covid you did not get benefits provided the employer was following state and federal guidelines for safety (masks if required, social distancing, etc.) We denied benefits in all the cases I can remember.
So this is a federal requirement, to get a vaccine, and in fact, you don't have to get the shot if you agree to weekly testing. So there is no good cause for not doing it. In fact, if you quit because your employer does NOT comply with the requirement, you would get benefits.

(1,910 posts)Even if they can get it in some states, it will range from 12-26 weeks. So if they want to throw away a job for that, whatever. At least we get them out of the workplace, one less opportunity for them to infect people.

And they know that's what they are, deep-down, and they don't really care. They'll only support democratic principles if the majority actually agree with them on some issue. Otherwise we're in a "republic", code-word for imposing their beliefs on others.

(14,847 posts)... but it was nearly 100% compliance in little time at all, from what I observed in public anyway.
After that mandate ended, it went to hell in a hurry. Far less mask-wearing than the percentage of the vaccinated around here.

Same thing with a vaccine. Couple of weeks ago I got the email asking my vaccination status...that's a pretty good indication of what's coming.
And lets be blunt, money talks, bullshit walks. Seeing the usual "I won't take it" stuff from people I know on facebook. I'm chuckling because as soon it becomes an issue of paycheck or no paycheck, I know they will get it. They won't admit it of course and may even lie they didn't get it to save face. But I'll know, I have a reputation on calling bullshit when I see it.
