Biden Takes His Shot

"SNIP......

“President Biden says he’s met the enemy — and it’s America’s unvaccinated,” Axios reports.

“The majority of U.S. sentiment may be with him. But Biden’s still taking a major political risk, and he and his team know it. He’s testing business leaders’ resolve, putting Democrats’ standing in swing states and districts on the line ahead of 2022’s midterm elections and tempting a tsunami of litigation over new requirements that could touch 100 million Americans.”

“His aggressive new mandates on vaccinations and testing — announced in a speech ahead of TV networks’ nightly news broadcasts — are far bolder and broader than most health care, business and political leaders expected.”

......SNIP"

"Today the Biden Administration went on the offensive. Vaccine mandates. A law suit against Texas. The ability to control national priorities is a power of the presidency."

He came back a few minutes later, to find two very quiet and sober boys.

Never had to repeat it.

4. If there wasn't consultation with the business community I'd be surprised.

But then he has shied away from big decisions and bold steps.

5. Why are the 600,000+ USPS workers exempt from the vaccine mandate? The President

has the power directly to mandate vaccines as they are US government workers. I don't understand how/why they are exempt and it undermines the seriousness of the issue.

6. From what I've read, USPS employees are considered 'quasi-federal employees'

So, the mandate for Federal employees will not apply to USPS but OSHA regulations for safety and health through the Labor Department will.

We'll have to wait and see how this plays out but the Administration is playing by established rules and the law. Something we didn't see under the odious Trump gang.

I trust Biden and his advisors know what they're doing.

7. The APWU put pressure on the administration.
Fri Sep 10, 2021, 01:09 AM

"The move exempts a massive chunk of the federal workforce — 644,000 employees and growing as the agency ramps up seasonal hiring — that interacts daily with an equally large swath of the public.

One of the Postal Service’s powerful unions, the American Postal Workers Union, in July criticized the administration’s efforts to require federal workers to be vaccinated and demanded that postal leadership collectively bargain on the issue.

“While the APWU leadership continues to encourage postal workers to voluntarily get vaccinated, it is not the role of the federal government to mandate vaccinations for the employees we represent,” the union said in a statement."

13. I understand that's the case with the union

I also understand that Biden and his advisors will do everything to bring people on board, not only for the sake of the union's position but for the health and safety of us all. This back and forth between different organizations and interests is all part of the process and Joe Biden and Marty Walsh have many, many years of negotiation experience.

It's one of the reasons I supported and voted for Biden--his experience and the people he could bring into the governance circle.

I for one am willing to let this play out. Because overall, I believe they'll get it done.

On the other hand, what other choice does he have? most agreed his re-election and his legacy will fall squarely on his ability to get the pandemic under control

10. It doesn't seem like much of a political risk.

The 25% who are unvaxed are stopping the rest of us from getting on with our lives. I think framing it that way was brilliant as well as accurate.

12. It is a major political risk to do nothing. We cannot stay in continued crisis year after year.
Fri Sep 10, 2021, 08:15 AM

Continued lack of hospital beds, death rates, children infected, hospital staff in crisis mode year after year.
Businesses, schools shut down.

We have to get this pandemic under some sort of control.
