If they continue to discourage people from getting the vaccines, in the name of "freedom" or whatever, and there is a huge surge in Covid this fall and winter, it will not look very good for their Party. Joe Biden could legitimately claim that he did everything he could do to try and get people to get the vaccine.
Hopefully, many more people will decide to get the "jab". If they do, and the Covid rates go down, Biden will get a lot of credit, deservedly so. It is almost a win-win for Joe Biden, politically speaking.
Republicans are walking a very thin line by criticizing Biden's effort to get more people vaccinated. If there is another surge, they will get most of the blame. If enough people get the vaccine, to bring down the terrible numbers, then Biden will get the credit.
Republicans must realize the minefield they are getting ready to walk through?

(51,974 posts)Republicans have done this gamble and caused over a million deaths and still they blame Biden for everything and the media keeps giving their partisan, pro-virus psychopathy air time.

(110,950 posts)...but this could be a very hard sell? I don't know that the "freedom" argument is enough to overcome another huge surge in deaths from the Covid-19?

(13,469 posts)Here in NYC my group of people is all vaccinated. But my childhood friends on Facebook are talking about this as though it's an overstep. Whatever. I support it, and I hope you're right that it won't lead to angry resistance that will get nowhere.
When I see politicians encouraging people not to comply, I get furious. I really don't understand why they're okay with their own constituents dying.

(14,154 posts)Yes some of their Republican constituents will die off. (Balanced by at least some Democratic voters that catch it from them)
But by their calculaitons, the few that die, will be "trumped" by the support from the other anti-vax, anti-mask, neanderthals who will make more of an effort now to get to the polls to support their freedumb loving governor for defending those freedumbs.

(10,848 posts)Everybody has 75 days to get vaccinated. A few weeks after that, it's all on the GOP.

(24,104 posts)And only one thing. Every elected republican official, whether they know it or not, is serving one purpose, to get people to send money to Donald Trump. That is all he cares about. It's his only source of income to keep businesses that are bleeding money afloat.
He doeasn't care about the pandemic, he doesn't care about natural disasters happening at an alarming rate, he probably doesn't even care if he gets elected again. He lives in the present only. He just needs money, and he needs it now.

(42,676 posts)Surge in COVID is a distraction from their scandals - Gaetz, Jan 6, stolen elections. They are counting on emotion - paranoia, fear, blame, anger to make themselves popular, and to rally their base with Court and abortions, and the anger and hatred they can throw at libs with vigilante repo men targeting liberal women.
We cannot remain too cool and too competent. We have to drive emotion too.

(45,261 posts)and it's mainly in red states and red counties. It's clearly correlated with unvaccinated people who often don't bother with masks or social distance guidelines either.
Republicans are gambling that it won't be so blatantly Republican this winter, and that's a risky bet. Sure there are breakthrough infections but outcomes are undoubtedly better for vaccinated folks with plenty of hard data to support it. This pandemic will continue to hit the unvaccinated worse than the vaccinated.
