People who were not fully vaccinated this spring and summer were more than 10 times more likely to be hospitalized, and 11 times more likely to die of covid-19, than those who were fully vaccinated, according to one of three major studies published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that highlight the continued efficacy of all three vaccines amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.
A second study showed that the Moderna coronavirus vaccine was moderately more effective in preventing hospitalizations than its counterparts from Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson. That assessment was based on the largest U.S. study to date of the real-world effectiveness of all three vaccines, involving about 32,000 patients seen in hospitals, emergency departments and urgent-care clinics across nine states from June through early August.
While the three vaccines were collectively 86 percent effective in preventing hospitalization, protection was significantly higher among Moderna vaccine recipients (95 percent) than among those who got Pfizer-BioNTech (80 percent) or Johnson & Johnson (60 percent). That finding echoes a smaller study by the Mayo Clinic Health System in August, not yet peer-reviewed, which also showed the Moderna vaccine to be more effective than Pfizer-BioNTech at preventing infections during the delta wave.
Noting the effectiveness of all vaccines against severe illness and death, public health officials have continued to urge people to get whatever vaccine is available, rather than to shop around and delay inoculation.

(14,846 posts)... of spike proteins, more than three times higher than Pfizer, was wise.
Moderna recipients showed more adverse reactions from the shots months ago, in terms of mild fever and the like, but it seemed worth it to me.
Edit: Or maybe the greater dosage and fewer hospitalizations aren't correlated? If that's the case, then it's luck with some other explanation.

(64,419 posts)As you described, I had a pretty potent 14 hour reaction to the 2nd dose. But, when it subsided it did so fast!
My wife had much less reaction to her Pfizer shots.

(14,846 posts)... because I had no real side-effects, other than a slightly sore arm, for a day after it was administered.
It supposedly didn't mean much, with lots of people getting good protection even without side-effects. So I tried to hang my hat on those reports.
Then almost exactly 24 hours after the shot, it hit me pretty hard. That was actually a relief to me, despite how I felt pretty lousy for about a full day thereafter.
Then I felt fully normal again, like you.

Study finds vaccinated patients 27 times more likely to develop COVID symptoms than unvaccinated

(14,846 posts)The "27 times" comment is especially meaningless at a place like Israel, since there was far more vaccinated people than people who had ever been infected there.

(5,004 posts)a large university now. I have been so worried about him during the pandemic. He is great about wearing high quality masks. So between that and (hopefully) a little more protection from Moderna he will be okay.
