Operation Hammer Strike, the San Bernardino County Sheriffs name for their current efforts to rid the High Desert communities of San Bernardino from illegal marijuana grows, is in week two of operations. Hammer Strike started at the beginning of September as an additional four Marijuana Enforcement Teams began serving warrants along with the one existing Team.
This week, between September 6, 2021, and September 10, 2021, investigators from the Marijuana Enforcement Team and several Sheriffs deputies served a total of 23 search warrants in high desert communities, including Hesperia, Phelan, Twentynine Palms, Newberry Springs, and Lucerne Valley. These search warrants were primarily the result of numerous complaints from residents of these rural areas about large outdoor marijuana cultivations.
Eleven of the 23 locations where sheriffs served warrants were in Phelan. Forty-one suspects were arrested from the various locations, with 12 of the suspects from Phelan. Sheriffs seized 21,002 marijuana plants, 5,628 pounds of processed marijuana, nine guns, over $9000 in cash, 6.2 ounces of psilocybin mushrooms, 1.7 ounces of cocaine, a stolen motorcycle, three stolen RV trailers, and a stolen trailer-mounted generator. According to the Sheriffs Department, one electrical bypass and one THC extraction lab were mitigated, and 113 greenhouses were found at these locations.
I live in Phelan and it is nice that we are finally getting some action, there are over 1000 illegal grows in the area. The water theft is getting worse and the grows and their armed bullies really need to go.

(19,192 posts)although I'm sure there were a fair share of local "get rich quick" dudes as well. The cartels usually try to "persuade" them to cease operating though. The old, "plata o plomo" discussion usually did the trick.

(32,661 posts)Lower prices on legal products. Lower prices equal less profits for illegal grows. There is no shortage of those that can and will grow the product. Make more legal, so those that wish to grow make a legal living.

I am growing, legally, this year. But these people were stealing water and growing on land they didn't own.
In some areas they damage the environment and leave a lot of garbage. I like weed, I don't like this way to go about it.

illegal grows in the desert means a lot of stolen water (its a desert, people), and a lot of thugs with guns protecting their investment. It is not some frickin joke. You do not want to be the person getting lost down that road.
If you think the legal stuff is too expensive, I dont know what to tell you except you could investigate what it costs to run a business with a storefront and employees and taxes. Oh, and the legal sellers have to actually pay for their water and electricity.
Many people are very ignorant as to the effects of these illegal grows have on the environment and the locals. It seems strange to me that liberals get all worked up when businesses fail to get the proper permits and blast businesses that harm the environment, unless that business is cannabis then large numbers of liberals will defend them, seems hypocritical to me.
