A third instance of fraudulent voter registration has been uncovered in the important swing state of Virginia, where a Republican consultant has been arrested and thousands of discarded voter registration forms were recovered from a dumpster earlier this week. According to the Not Larry Sabato blog, a law student at James Madison University registered to vote on campus, but found when she tried to verify the change online, found that her form had never been submitted.
On Thursday, Raw Story reported that 31-year-old Colin Small, a Republican operative employed by Pinpoint, a firm contracted by Republican Party of Virginia, was arrested and charged with four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of disclosure of voter registration application, and one count of obstruction of justice for throwing active voter registration forms into a dumpster.

(53,661 posts)During the Iraq war hype, conservatives threw it out there so many times it became meaningless. Treason under the Consitution is a strict thing. Despite the Sedition Act, it's nearly impossible to enforce now. Lesser charges are made instead. The words have a lot of emotional power so we use them to express outrage more than anything. It is a felony to do what they did. The only solution is to GOTV.

(10,021 posts)rid of the Romney-owned voting machines and go back to paper ballots. This election is turning into a sham. I'd like to see them throw out R&R and have Mr. Obama win by default. That would stop this shit right now from ever happening again.

(27,625 posts)Late last month, the RNC fired another voter registration contractor Virginia-based Strategic Allied Consulting after more than 100 suspect forms it collected in Florida were turned over to local prosecutors. Virginia was one of the states that had a contract with the company.
We have heard a lot from Republicans both in the Virginia General Assembly and across the country about their numerous fears that voters were committing fraud, (Virginia State Sen. Donald) McEachin said, referring to the GOPs push for strict voter identification laws. It certainly looks like, instead, the fraud is being committed by the Republicans on the voters.

(5,465 posts)and that the GOP operative was charged with 8 felony counts, along with several misdemeanors. I've read the LA times article too, and can't find anything about the "thousands" of registration forms. This is a HUGE number, and a big deal. A BIG deal. Do you (OP) or anyone else reading this know where this number came from?
TIA!

(5,465 posts)you came along. roxanne@rawstory is the only contact info on their site; the author of the piece has no contact information listed. I'm still waiting almost 3 days later. Oh, and Not Larry Sabato confirms he did not use the term "thousands", he listed "eight", as I wrote in my response to the OP.
I'm tapped out of Boolean, Lexus-Nexus, and other ORM methodologies. FWIW, legal research was my bread and butter for years. So, do you have anything more you consider helpful to add, or can we put our discussion (albeit, is it really?) to rest?

People arrive at the polls and can't vote.
I have a suggestion for the states where this is happening. In my state we have same-day voter registration. We can register to vote up to and including Election Day. So, if there was a problem or human error, the person could register and vote at the polls.
Does Virginia have a Democrat Sec of State who would be able to pass similar legislation, in an emergency basis? Some Sec/States have this power. If not, maybe the VA state legislature would be willing to pass a law.
This has got to be huge news in VA! If I was in VA, I'd be double checking my registration!

(12,769 posts)That is the way they charge small time criminals. Why should this be any different? He should have thousands of charges for destruction of voter registration cards and the same for obstruction of justice. This is some serious malarkey.
