https://www.rawstory.com/gavin-newsom-larry-elder/Rob Stutzman, a GOP operative in Sacramento, tells the Examiner that Elder's penchant for making controversial statements helped Newsom change the race away from being a referendum on his governorship and into a choice between a Democratic governor and a Trump-loving Republican.
"Newsom has successfully framed the race as him versus Elder, and Democratic voters are responding by voting," he said. "Elder has no appeal outside of GOP voters."
An unnamed Republican consultant similarly fumed to the Examiner that Elder's emergence as GOP frontrunner completely changed the course of the campaign.
"Before Elder, the race was all about Gavin, and our polls were looking very good," they explained. "If the election had been four or more weeks ago, we would have won."
Elder last week gave Newsom some last-minute campaign material when he boasted to right-wing radio host Mark Levin that he would replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) with a Republican if she died while he was governor.

(9,041 posts)Four weeks ago, it was nerve-wrackingly close. As the one consultant said, it was all framed on whether you liked Newsom or not, and plenty of people were pretty grumpy about him.
Then Elder kept talking and talking and talking.
He saw people were paying attention to him who ordinarily don't, loved the attention, and went hog wild.
He completely misread the room to our benefit.

(9,041 posts)Trumpism in general doesn't have any purchase here outside of mostly rural areas and a few swaths of affluent suburb. Going full Trump was about the dumbest thing he could've done.
So, well done there.
If they had coalesced around a moderate and vaguely competent candidate, it would've been closer. Schwarzenegger wasn't just a celebrity - he didn't come off as a crazy right-winger. If some Republican candidate had been passingly known and said things like, "I won't replace Feinstein with a Republican," he/she could've gotten some traction. At least made it closer.
But that kind of personal restraint wasn't ever going to come from a talk show host. Their whole thing is self-confidence in their own ego.

I knew about the minimum wage comment, but not that he thinks employer should be allowed to ask women (and not men!) such intrusive personal questions.
Dude acts like he fell through a time warp from about 1960. Sheesh.

(32,423 posts)Nearly two decades before conservative radio host Larry Elder joined the long list of candidates who could unseat California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in the states second recall election in history, Elder suggested that venture capitalists have the right to ask women whether and when they intend to have children as a way to protect their investment.
Are there legitimate business reasons for a venture capitalist to ask a female entrepreneur whether she intends to have children? Hell, yes, Elder wrote in his 2002 book.
But the man believed to be Newsoms top contender didnt stop there.
In several other sections of Showdown: Confronting Bias, Lies and the Special Interests That Divide America, Elder suggested that women who choose to have children are not dedicated to their jobs and are unable to give an all-hands-on-deck commitment to work. In another passage, Elder went after former acting Massachusetts governor Jane Swift (R) for taking on the new role after giving birth to twins, claiming that to tell women they can run a state, have family and children, and be equally attentive to all is a lie.

SEXISM IN FUNDING?
-------------
But the USA Today article implies unfairness, if not discrimination. How? Well, some venture capitalistsget thisdare ask these female entrepreneurs whether they intend to have children. One female entrepreneur sought advice from a male mentor: When [Christine] Warren, 32, was planning her start-up near Philadelphia, a man she approached for advice asked if she had any children. She said she had a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old. So youre done? he asked. Warren recalls thinking: Are you really asking me that? Yeah, he was really asking you that. And why not?
When a venture capitalist ponies up tens of millions of dollars to invest in a start-up or expansion, he wants to safeguard his investment. Suppose Danny Daredevil approaches you for millions for his high-tech start-up. He presents a detailed, if optimistic, business plan that shows gradual increase in revenues with a huge payoff in five to ten years. But Danny, on the weekends, enjoys competitive stunt skiing. He also likes to drag race, again, just on the weekends, mind you. Question: Do you insert a clause forbidding Danny Daredevil from engaging in his enjoyable, but high risk, weekend hobbies? Of course you do. In fact, many professional sports contracts forbid baseball, football, and basketball players to engage in hazardous conduct not related to their sport. Call it protecting an investment.
Are there legitimate business reasons for a venture capitalist to ask a female entrepreneur whether and when she intends to have children? Hell, yes. In fact, USA Today quotes a professor who says, Some women may be slowed by child-rearing. But others start companies so they can better control their schedules to spend more time with their kids. In the article, one female entrepreneur admits that if she had never had kids, she absolutely would have begun a company sooner. Doesnt the fact that some women may be slowed by child-rearing warrant an obvious, sensible question? Are you committed?
Forget about venture capitalists. How about regular ol employers? Why cant they ask the same questions? Many businessmen and businesswomen deal with this reality every day: Will the woman who applies as a sales manager give me enough steady, committed time on the job to warrant my investment? Employers also face the mandatory Family and Medical Leave Act, allowing an employee, after the birth of a child or for a family emergency, to keep his or her job and take time off with employer-paid medical benefits. These laws, quite simply, increase the cost of hiring women, and the expense is passed on to consumers. But ask a woman if she intends to have children and expect a hot call from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
A heavy thing, asking somebody for dough. Along with a solid business plan, venture capitalists seek an all-hands-on-deck commitment. Are you dedicated? Will you give me 24/7?
Sissies need not apply. Or can I not say that?

It's a fucking disgrace that liberals, progressives and other "sane" people haven't organized to take Hate Radio down.
Now, we have to suffer these fools.
Our last VP got his start as a local wingnut Hate Radio talker. That's bad enough, but look at state legislators and current House and Senate Retrumplicans.
How many got their start through hate radio?
