I notice people are saying the low vaccinated states like Idaho have only 40% fully vaccinated. Florida has 54% fully vaccinated. Illinois has 54% fully vaccinated.
Yes, almost everyone hospitalized has not had the vaccine. BUT, what is the difference between Illinois and Florida? It's the masks. We mandate masks. The parts of the state with the highest numbers of Covid at this time isn't Chicago. It's right wing areas in the southern part of the state that don't vaccinate much and don't wear masks and hate Governor Pritzker. But, Chicago has a lot of people wearing masks and we are mandated for it indoors.
We also have epidemiologists advising the politicians. They told us Lalapalooza wouldn't be a superspreader event because the vaccine or recent testing was required. I had my doubts . But, it turned out they were correct.
I do believe if we had a Governor and Mayor who didn't push masking or science we'd be more like Florida.

(58,647 posts)Vax is the most effective, of course, but the simple shit like masking and social distancing complete the shield that protects people. If all people were vaxxed there would be less need for masks and separation, but we are where we are.
So you're probably right.

(23,091 posts)Sadly I was born and raised in Jacksonville FL and all my living direct family is here. I hate so many of the folks here, just really think they are sub-human knuckle draggers who are fine with killing others because they have no respect for anyone but themselves & are so stupid they think they won't get sick. Our children and my sister live here and I don't want to lose that so we stay.
Our governor is nothing but a murderer for political profit - his own. Anyone who moves to this state voluntarily, whose family aren't here, are idiots and are not welcome. People who are transferred by their jobs often have no other recourse so not including them. It's the rich asses moving here to avoid taxes that are killing this previously beautiful state.

(64,995 posts)Our World in Data uses the entire population. Their numbers essentially matched what you say.
But, the denominator is the states' total population.
Roughly 14% of the population is not yet eligible for the vax.
So, for both states the rate as a % of eligible is closer to 5 in 8, and at least one dose over 75%.
Just a slightly bright light in a discouragingly poor situation.
