COVID Update: Watching the reactions & meltdowns to the proposal that Americans are required to get vaccinated (or tested) to be around others.
There is so little actually controversial here but the sideshow is first rate. 1/
Real people by large majorities support vaccine requirements. Weve had them for decades, even centuries with little controversy.
No governor has threatened to light himself on fire & blow himself up (until now). 2/
Like traffic lights, as inconvenient as they sometimes are, people are pretty ok with rules if they do things like keep kids safe, reduce deaths, and allow businesses to be open safely. 3/
One of the reasons this had to be done is that people like rules better when theyre fair & applied equally.
The case of @UnitedAirlines_ is a good one. Their ceo, Scott Kirby, required his employees to get vaccinated. 4/
Scott is whats called a leader. Several times he invited other CEOs to do the same. Some did.
But none of the other airlines did. Theyre not leaders. But that put United at a disadvantage for doing the right thing. 5/
In a statement the largest companies in America, the Business Roundtable, of which the airlines belong, heartily endorsed the new requirements on businesses.
The followers thought it was a good idea of everyone has to do it. Biden made it easier for them.6/
Biden was more than willing to be the target to get people who were afraid to act to act. The principal difference between this president & the last is this one is willing to be accountable for managing the pandemic. 7/
If you look at what is being asked of businesses once a week testing or proof of vaccination, its hardly enough to cause JD Vance to lose his shit like this. 8/

I know that getting something put up your nose once/week to make youre not spreading isnt exactly a day at the beach, but its also hardly coffee rations or sleeping in trenches.
Were sort of in the category of the least we could possibly ask. 9/
According to surveys, about 25 million people have already said that what it would take for them to get vaccinated is having it required. Ive done research on this group when in the White House so let me tell you about them. 10/
Inconvenience is a reason they arent vaccinated
Theyre young.
They dont think much about COVID.
They have the rest of their vaccines.
Theyve never heard of JD Vance, but if they did, theyd think hes a whiner.
The last point is pure speculation. 11/
Many people who work by the hour havent been able to get time off & worry that if they feel under the weather after a shot, they would get fired.
Biden is requiring paid time off for vaccines & any recovery. Causing several near-constitutional scholars 👇much confusion. 12/
There is a confusing protest that vaccination requirements are anti-business.
You know whats anti-business? People getting COVID. Photo C/O @VinGuptaMD 13/
Who else is facing a vaccine requirement? People in health care settings, federal employees and fed contractors. How will they react?
Well, look at the military & the VA. Theyve gone from 50% to 85-90% vaccinated & their deadline is ahead. 14/
Are there people with legitimate concerns? Of course there are.
But its also true that 80% of hardcore unvaccinated people believe one of 5 falsehoods about the vaccine.15/
One important thing now is that trusted sources must supply reliable information during this period. Doctors, clergy, employers.
If people find reliable sources, great. If they get vaccinated because they feel coerced, Ill spare my tears for those ineligible or at-risk. 16/
Those making a spectacle of themselves & throwing their toys out of the stroller shouldnt confuse the fact that these steps are very routine & common sense by normal standards.
By pandemic standards, theyre in the well, duh category. 17/
Even though we started before them, 45 countries have now vaccinated more of their population. We are a world hot spot. 2400 reported deaths yesterday.
Were not enjoying freedom. Were paying respect to people who perpetuate ignorance & liars. 18/
People who are unvaccinated have a choice to make. Its the same one theyve had all along. It hasnt changed.
What has changed is that their freedom to breathe all over us in crowded places will diminish.
Sadly for them, the constitution doesnt give us that right.
Over to you Twitter.

that TFG or governor so-and-so is vaccinated they say "I didn't see it. If he got the shot how come it ain't on video?"

Gallup specifically asked respondents, "Would you favor or oppose businesses requiring people to show proof of coronavirus/Covid-19 vaccination in order to do the following over the next several months?" The findings included:
The results are notable in their own right, but just as important is the shift in public attitudes over time: In nearly every category, the percentage of Americans expressing support for vaccine requirements has increased since the spring. (The exception refers to workplace requirements, but that's only because Gallup didn't previously poll the question.)
Indeed, in some instances, public attitudes have flipped. In April, for example, Gallup found that a narrow majority opposed vaccine requirements to stay in a hotel, and now those numbers are reversed. Similarly, in April, 60 percent were against businesses requiring proof of vaccination before allowing people to eat at a restaurant, and now a narrow majority has the opposite position.
53 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to eat at a restaurant.
53 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to stay in a hotel.
56 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to go to work at an office or work site.
58 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to attend events with large crowds.
61 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to travel by airplane.
