(115,681 posts)he couldn't make the event all about him. He'd have had to share the stage with the current president and two former ones and he wouldn't get top billing. It's good that he stayed away because he soils everything he touches, but respect had nothing to do with it.

(23,222 posts)He stayed away because a) he wouldn't be the center of attention and adoration; b) there was no money in it for him; c) he didn't want to stand beside the black guy and the guy that beat him last year, and d) nobody wanted him there. That's the size of it. But in the end, it was the most respectful thing he could've done--because attending would have been MONUMENTALLY disrespectful.
