A tour manager who worked with The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Peter Frampton was killed in an accident while he was digging a grave for his family dog. The Press Democrat reports that at the time of his death, Mick Brigden, 73, was still managing the career of guitarist Joe Satriani, who said in a tribute that he worked the biggest and the best, but always knew it was important to be kind, be respectful, be cool and do things the right way. The exact nature of last weekends accident at his home in Santa Rosa was not disclosed; Brigdens wife said he was taken to the hospital after it but did not survive.

(101,702 posts)and the dirt walls collapsed in on him. Very strange and so damned tragic.
Digging a grave so deep the walls can collapse on you, uh, seems like overkill. No pun intended.

(101,702 posts)Though I've known people to do so in their backyards in the event that someone might try to plant over it in future years.

(22,441 posts)their father's stone. Apparently a stone just fell over on him.
My husband was just a kid at the time and I never asked his mother or any other family members about it. It was very difficult for them all.
When you think about those stones, if they are not cemented in they could easily fall if they are too tall and if the ground is destabilized because of rain.

(10,068 posts)due to hidden fault lines running through the dirt. Here, state law requires on commercial sites that if someone is in a ditch, there must be at least one person nearby who stays out of that ditch so they can rescue the digger if the sides collapse.

(26,271 posts)OSHA and any other sane regulations, including state, require shoring for holes on over 5 feet.
Even 5 feet is unsafe unless you have a competent person inspecting.
Thinking about this gives me the her bee gee bees. My brother and I worked college summers for some clown who one time had us walking behind a fully loaded concrete truck pouring in an 8 foot deep un-shored trench. His idea of safety was having us stay back behind the truck.
Trenches and underground work is nothing to fuck around with. I got on a buddy of mine who posted on Facebook a picture of his boyfriend entering what looked like a clean out vault in the yard of their condo. A good way to get asphyxiated.
