Miami Fans Save Cat From Upper Deck Fall Using American Flag

It may be the most heart-stopping video of the college football season, but it wasn't on the field. In a bizarre sequence at Hard Rock Stadium during the Miami–Appalachian State game, a cat was dangling from the upper deck and fell into a crowd of fans who used an American flag to break its fall.

The group of Hurricane fans then picked up the death-defying feline and presented it to the stadium Simba-style to a roar of cheers. Although, the cat didn't seem to be in the best mood and can be seen clawing its heroes.

After the rescue, the heroes were identified as Craig and Kimberly Cromer, who are husband and wife and it was their American flag used in the grab. Craig said while the cat was dangling, it urinated on fans below it. ..............(more)

Of course it urinated on people that's what you do when you're terrified.

in that position by himself.

And the poor thing was so scared. I hope he has a nice safe comfy home now and lives a good life.

It probably was but after landing, and in a sea of unfamiliar hoo-mans. Who immediately grab it and hoist it up in the air to show it off to the roaring crowds. Any cat would not be amused.

I understand the temptation to look like a hero and show off how the cat is fine. But it should instead been wrapped in the flag, over its head too, to calm it down a little first, on the ground, and then carry it out carefully. To a vet for an exam if possible, even if its feral.

If somebody pushed that cat over the ledge I hope they get what they deserve.

they were trying to catch the poor thing, who subsequently tried to "escape" from them

I wish care had been taken to take the poor thing to a shelter - there does not seem to be any followup

When I adopted my kittens a few months ago, one of them did similar.

We have a loft space half hanging over the living room. On the first night we had them, one got upstairs into the loft. New environment, didn't know us yet. We didn't want them up there unsupervised yet, so my partner went up after him. I was standing off in the kitchen.

Next thing I know, a tiny kitten falls from the sky.

He was apparently cornered and skittish. Rather than try to run past my partner and go back down the stairs, he jumped through the railings into the living room below. Freaked me out because it was so high (12-13 ft) and he was so small, but he was fine. Kittens are springy.

He never attempted it again. He's settled in and loves us. But fear and panic will do things. Like leaping from a burning building. I've seen other cats do similar before.

Kittens are indeed springy, though I never want to test it myself. I almost always adopt old, lazy beasts. I wonder why...

I guess they and I have a lot in common.

From the moment they're in the air to the instant after they hit the ground, cats' bodies are built to survive high falls, scientists say.

They have a relatively large surface area in proportion to their weight, thus reducing the force at which they hit the pavement.

Cats reach terminal velocity, the speed at which the downward tug of gravity is matched by the upward push of wind resistance, at a slow speed compared to large animals like humans and horses.

For instance, an average-sized cat with its limbs extended achieves a terminal velocity of about 60mph (97km/h), while an average-sized man reaches a terminal velocity of about 120mph (193km/h), according to the 1987 study by veterinarians Wayne Whitney and Cheryl Mehlhaff.

As long as the cat has a reasonable amount of fur and is not obese, the odds are that it will land unhurt from a fall.
