If you're still holding on to some warm and fuzzy feelings about winter, this could be the year that finally changes your mind, too. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the upcoming season ain't going to be pretty.
The 230-year-old publicationwhich claims to make predictions with 80% accuracyjust released its annual forecast for winter 2021-2022. It's going to be so cold across the country, they have actually taken to calling it the "season of shivers."
A painful combination of above-average snowfall and below-average temperatures are expected in the New England area, parts of the Appalachian region, throughout the Ohio Valley, in the northern part of the Deep South, and even in southern New Mexico.
The Old Farmer's Almanac editor, Janice Stillman, said this winter could be "one of the longest and coldest that weve seen in years."

(19,186 posts)if they've altered their original formula for forecasting to allow for global climate change?
Good luck getting a straight answer out of them.

I have serious doubts about the integrity of that 80% number they tout.

I spoke with a rancher at a going out of business western wear store in a nearby town. He said they got almost no snow last winter and if the same happens this winter, they are in very big trouble.

(4,427 posts)but I'm not impressed with the accuracy of "The Old Farmer's Almanac".
I trust the United States Weather Bureau. Much more accurate, although it's not as "long term" in it's predictions.

(2,047 posts)Most TV weather forecasters have a hard time matching that level of accuracy for one-week forecasts! But the Almanac is a lot of fun to read.

(1,849 posts)I basically have 2 wardrobes, one for warm weather in April thru September, and one for cold weather October thru March.
In spring/summer I'm in skirts, shorts, sundresses, t shirts, tank tops, and sandals.
I love the summer.
In fall/winter I layer up, thermal tops and bottoms, long pants, long sleeves, flannel shirts, sweaters galore, wool socks, assorted boots, not to mention the jackets, vests, coats, hats, gloves and ice cleats. I'll be ready!
Thanks for the heads up.

(25,134 posts)Predictions are on the last two pages.
For what it's worth Texas was hot and dry last winter, with the exception of the freak cold.
People already had tomatoes in the ground. It was exceptionally warm. Then, we had a week of cold.
After the cold, it did not get below freezing one single time. We were on water restrictions until May 15th.
NOAA is predicting warm and dry conditions for Southern CA, AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, Al, GA and FL.
NOAA is predicting wet and cold for the Pacific NW.
