are we in for a surge in covid cases around the country ?

(28,303 posts)Of course, they're fucking all of us over with their selfish consumption of hospital resources and the unpaid bill they leave when they croak.

(7,508 posts)the protocol was that even if you have been vaccinated you should wear a mask in crowds?
Tomconroy
(7,611 posts)Technically the guidance says something like you 'might consider' wearing a mask in crowded outdoor spaces where Covid rates are high.

(6,232 posts)Is there any data on cases from those events?

(57,073 posts)With tailgating. It was canceled last year, per the article due to covid. As if covid is no longer an issue! (Several days ago, I saw a headline stating if TN were a country, covid cases would rank 2nd internationally!)
So, given that I have never had an appreciation for football, I looked this up.
Stadium capacity is over 60,000.
Why?

(152,964 posts)and stupid, selfish people DO NOT CARE
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)For all the football "talent" & fans everywhere, especially those who gather this way during a pandemic already breaking our healthcare system.
No offense intended to anyone here. To each their own, but this type of gathering at this tine is anti-social, imo.

At this point it is clear they aren't shutting down sports again. Only thing you can do if you are worried about it is avoid those events and people you know that attended.

(3,439 posts)This summer. Its great to see people out at games enjoying their lives. Im looking forward to seeing the Rams play at SoFi stadium in a couple weeks.

(7,611 posts)about a week ago. Over there they endured much longer lockdowns. They are highly vaxxed. The jist of the story was that people were ignoring mask suggestions and safe spacing. Covid cases were rising a bit but hospitalizations and deaths were a small fraction of what they had been during the lockdown last winter. I did look at the British Covid guidance and it talked at some length about the need for each person to make their own risk assessments. The Brits have pretty much made a decision they want their lives back and are willing to pay some price for it. Of course they could be wrong and some new variant could come along. But short of that they won't be going backwards.
I think it's the same here. It isn't mentioned much but we are a lot better off than we were last winter. Even with what's happening in the red states deaths are nothing like they were last winter. The vaccines have been a miracle. And people are making decisions about what they want to do and can do with relative safety. We all benefit from a revived economy and the success of the performing arts. And social life is extraordinarily important to younger people in particular. We need to let them get out as soon as it's reasonably safe. And evidence is growing that for the fully vaxxed a lot of things are pretty safe.
Things could go down hill but I'll make an uneducated guess that with vaccinations and some natural immunity (The CDC is estimating that the number of people who have contracted Covid is about 120 million as of July 1. There will be a much bigger estimate in October) we just might have this behind us come Spring. But we have already come a long way.

(27,759 posts)I'm assuming the stadium crowds are highly vaxxed. And I know some of them were requiring masks in the common areas and bathrooms.
It's a little unfair to single out football. The US Open was packed. The EPL had had full stadiums. People have been going to baseball games all summer.
Indoor sports will be different, and I hope proof of vax is required, along with masks
What I don't understand is why teams aren't handing.out masks with their logos on them. They still have giveaways - masks seem so obvious.
Tomconroy
(7,611 posts)One line in his speech the other day to that effect but I think all politicians should start saying that.
Your mask giveaway idea is fab!

(27,759 posts)I got my vaccine the first possible day and I have no problem showing my card.
Tomconroy
(7,611 posts)NY state has a system for a passport that ties into the state vaccine records. But of course it only works if you were vaxxed in NY. Not sure how to solve that problem.
LisaM
(27,759 posts)I know that people are faking vax cards but it can't be that high a percentage.

These are the same numskulls that will be protesting the mandate later.
But the mandate is the mandate. If they don't die first, they will be arrested and vaccinated.

(14,846 posts)... it's nuts, despite how it's outdoors. The fans are packed closely together at most of those stadiums.
My brother, whose wife DIED from Covid last November, is already dating a woman who works for Ohio State University and gets two free tickets to all of their home games. He asked me if I'd like to attend Saturday's game with him, using her tickets, and I asked him if he was crazy?!
And I know where those seats are located too, after getting a couple free tickets from an OSU professor years ago. They're close to the field and near an end zone, and everyone is disgustingly jammed together in that bleacher section!
A very obese guy next to me, when I used those two free tickets with another brother years ago, was basically using up two numbers marked on the bleachers... so that obviously made it seem even worse back then. But it would still be very congested even with thin adults.

(14,846 posts)... although the death numbers aren't nearly as bad, because of the vaccinations.
But the overall infection numbers certainly aren't anything to be proud of, especially since it's not even Winter yet.

(14,846 posts)... with packed crowds -- i.e., I have no desire to attend any of them.
Football stadiums can be more tightly congested than a lot of venues, I suppose. It depends.
Paul Brown Stadium (Cincinnati Bengals) have regular seats with armrests and back supports, but Ohio Stadium (Ohio State Buckeyes) basically have people sitting atop each other in bleachers.

(12,047 posts)its the mass standing in line crowds getting in and out and walking the concourses that would keep me from ever going now.

(14,846 posts)... even without a pandemic, after seeing every men's restroom covered with puddles of urine from wall-to-wall. I hope it's not always like that!
I was with a brother who apparently inherited our mother's small bladder, so he just trudged through it to reach their "urine troughs". Lol, that's never appealing to me either! It was pretty easy for me to "hold in", as usual, compared to that brother. I mean, I usually don't even feel an urge to urinate. Then a lot comes out, when I actually go.
Edit: All of the restrooms near us, anyway. We kept speed-walking trying to find one with a dry floor for my brother, but he gave up on the idea eventually.

(14,846 posts)The daily new cases are much higher than a year ago.
The deaths are not nearly so bad (given the number of cases), thanks to the vaccines, but the case numbers are ridiculous when it's not even Winter.
LisaL
(44,962 posts)And hospitals are overwhelmed, so they can't handle many more cases.
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,846 posts)... MUCH higher number of cases than exactly a year ago.
It's indeed terrible, though. And lots of people out there seem to be pretending that the pandemic is almost over!
The delta variant is far more contagious and deadly, as you surely know since you keep close tabs on the situation.
