Boston University professor, 40, dies after falling 20 feet through rusted staircase at subway stop that had been closed for a year for repairs
Dr. David K. Jones, an associate professor at Boston University, fell 20 feet to his death on Saturday when he slipped through a badly-rusted staircase
The staircase has been closed to pedestrians for at least a year as state officials say they need to make repairs
It is badly rusted and is missing six steps
Residents say the staircase has been like that for years
It remains unclear how Jones, 40, gained access to the staircase
His wife, Sarah Sacuto, posted on Facebook that he had gone for a run and 'never returned home'
Jones was pronounced dead on the scene
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has warned residents not to use the staircase nearly 40 times since January 2020, writing in a tweet in March that the stairs were inaccessible and pedestrians should find other ways to access the T station while 'necessary repairs are being made.'

(9,998 posts)They had time to warn residents FORTY TIMES in the last 20 months.
We really care more about money than human life. Otherwise fixing that safety hazard would have been a priority.
I sense a big lawsuit, and the taxpayers will be the ones who get to pay.

(61,593 posts)and years. The stairway is between an overpass and a parkway near the subway station.
The legislature has to budget it and earmark the funds. Even then, that's not a guarantee it will happen. State management is notorious in this neighborhood.

Unless maybe hes related to the guy who tried to leap across the Devils Churn yesterday and its in their blood to ignore danger.

(152,964 posts)just that bright yellow "DO NOT CROSS" crime scene tape would seem prudent, knowing that a fall from that height could be lethal

(4,110 posts)No way I could be responsible for closing those stairs and not done something at the gap.
Shocking negligence.

(152,964 posts)it would have been so easy, and cheap, to just add some tape, or twine, anything to make the danger more clear

RIP, Professor Jones. I'm sorry.

(45,630 posts)Doesn't make sense that he would take such a risk with a clearly marked dangerous area.
Unless he has a history of foolhardy behavior.
I hope the police will do a through investigation.

(10,327 posts)to have stairs like that anywhere! Either fixed or removed. So weird what happened. Maybe it was dark and he didn't see the gap when he was jogging...
