The following is a letter, written by my friend and neighbor, to Gov. DeSantis and the other Republican thugs who are destroying the people of Florida.
Thank you for my freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution, its amendments, Court rulings, and legislation at federal, state, and local levels. Especially dear to me are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Thank you for the right to live my life and move at will between states. In 2011, I chose to move to Florida from New York State. Here I found employment in my chosen profession as well as respite from snow shoveling, winter clothing, and state income taxes. Thats nice. And I retired early in pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, once I reached the age of Medicare eligibility, I sadly discovered that Florida had not opted-in to expanded Medicaid and food assistance eligibility that would protect me from becoming penniless before I die. I am expected to completely deplete my assets as a Florida resident before receiving extra support from my hard-earned tax payments over the years though these funds are available for distribution if only you would reconsider.
Thank you for the liberty to return to the workforce, necessitated by health-care expenses not covered by Medicare, including the monthly premium deducted from my Social Security check. Unfortunately, because of the state of my immune system, I am not at liberty to attend gatherings where I might network for even more work and professional visibility. What would change that? MASKS AND VACCINATIONS.
Thank you for considering the pursuit of happiness that would come of being more certain that everything possible is being done to protect my right to leave my home without fear of being exposed to an unvaccinated, unmasked individual carrying COVID 19. I respect everyones right to make decisions regarding their personal health. Do you, as an elected official respect mine? Apparently, you dont because both you and the Appeals Court fool heartedly believe that protecting the public by mandating MASKS AND VACCINATIONS to fight the COVID 19 and variants pandemic is somehow different from what the country faced in the throes of the polio pandemic or the early-century flu epidemic.
I beseech you to restore my right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by dropping the misguided ban on MASKS AND PROOF OF VACCINATION and opting in to expanded Medicaid and food stamp eligibility!
Beseechingly,
(Name and address were included, but deleted for posting on DU)
The reply to her from the Governors office was a standard form that, in effect, said "Fuck Off."
Due to the volume of emails sent to the Governor, there may be a delay in responding to your e-mail. You may wish to view the Governor's web site, [www.FLGov.com]www.FLGov.com, which provides information on current issues and answers to frequently asked questions.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact Governor DeSantis.

(23,003 posts)My house is paid off and I live in a peaceful former old growth oak forest across from the river, and my entire immediate family, small as it is, is here. I do not encourage other people to move here, not at all. It's not a welcoming place with the nazi right wing in full charge of our state, don't come! Jobs also pay next to nothing here and the state unemployment system is designed to break and has only paid out 25% of the money it owes from last year (last I saw, which was earlier in the year).

Seems to be a race between creating a concrete peninsula, or watching it disappear beneath the ocean.

(23,003 posts)Sadly, it is truly a race and one that's being lost in our reservoirs, Miami and other low places. That's why, when we moved back here 30 years ago to help mom and dad, we bought a house that was 20 ft. above the river - knew about climate change and rising waters way back then.
