Washington (CNN) — Two days after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, President Donald Trump's top military adviser, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, single-handedly took top-secret action to limit Trump from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike or launching nuclear weapons, according to "Peril," a new book by legendary journalist Bob Woodward and veteran Washington Post reporter Robert Costa.

Woodward and Costa write that Milley, deeply shaken by the assault, 'was certain that Trump had gone into a serious mental decline in the aftermath of the election, with Trump now all but manic, screaming at officials and constructing his own alternate reality about endless election conspiracies.'
Milley worried that Trump could 'go rogue,' the authors write.

"You never know what a president's trigger point is," Milley told his senior staff, according to the book.

In response, Milley took extraordinary action, and called a secret meeting in his Pentagon office on January 8 to review the process for military action, including launching nuclear weapons. Speaking to senior military officials in charge of the National Military Command Center, the Pentagon's war room, Milley instructed them not to take orders from anyone unless he was involved.

Sounds like Trump was playing out the often used bunker scene from the Hitler movie.

Trump did disappear for I think 10 days after the election. Totally checked out. The whole “stolen” thing started without him but he can’t miss a good grift now can he?

but I'm pretty grateful for Gen. Milley. I think he stood between tfg and a LOT of destruction. And I don't think he's necessarily one to toot his own horn.

OMG! The US has come to this - that a general felt it was necessary to protect the nation and the world from the nation's president.

Good Lord.

I felt exactly the same way - it's still hard to believe that this twisted man was in the White House. Thank God, we survived.

as leader of the GOP and so much support?

I know a bunch of the reasons yet it is confounding.

He shouldn't get a single vote from any American. He's unhinged/imbalanced.

Even his 30,000+ lies/misrepresentations should have him getting zero consideration.
And Jan 6th insurrection, of course.
etc, etc.

And the GOP are grooming a replacement in Governor WRong DeGenocidis in Florida.

It's crazy.
