More workers are facing mandatory Covid vaccination or no job

As more and more people return to the workplace following months of working from home, the question of one's vaccination status is becoming increasingly relevant and, in an increasing number of cases, a condition of employment.

In both the U.S. and Europe there are a growing number of jobs and sectors which are now requiring people to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 — not only in the more obvious public-facing roles like healthcare and education but also in the technology, hospitality, travel and finance sectors.

When Covid vaccine rollouts began in the U.S. and Europe around nine months ago, the majority of the workforce had to wait in line to receive a shot, with the elderly and healthcare workers prioritized.

But vaccinations in high-income countries have since become more accessible to all adults and employers have encouraged their staff to be immunized, both for their workers health and to get their businesses back to normal.

2. Hitting close to home.

My lawn care guy has 2 workers. One is out, his wife and daughters have COVID-19. Yesterday, the guy who does my flower beds, his Secretary just came back. She had it too.

4. My institution is doing it

and I'm very pleased. I've already had two employees resign because they don't want to be forced to take the vaccine.

Good riddance, I say. I don't need you around our clients if you refuse to keep them and yourself safe. I've already had many problems with people being out because they contracted COVID or their children did. It disrupts our services to people who are truly in need. The more people we get vaccinated the fewer times we have to shut operations because of staff out sick.

The last guy who said to me that he would rather quit than be made to take the vaccine, I looked at him with a blank stare and said, "Well....bye". I've sadly lost my compassion on this. Do it or get out.

6. My company is weighing what to do

Very large corporations 300,000 workers in the US. Until now, Covid management has been local according to the laws of each state we are in. But this is going to change things, takes us a while to do anything though.

We were going to be back at the office in 2 weeks 3 days a week, I will continue to WFH full time though if my employer can't guarantee I won't be sharing the building with unvaccinated people.

7. My company

has already sent notice that vaccines are required to return to the office. And they have already extended our WFH to January 2022 (we were scheduled for a hybrid return October 18th).

8. My company is continuing work from home indefinitely now.

So they've finally gotten smart now, took some time, but they're tying returning to work for a hybrid work model, 2-3 days at home a week, 2-3 in the office. We were scheduled to return to work 9/27, but now they've tied it to the county your office is located in's Covid transmission rate according to the CDC website. Really feel like they're being smart. Basically, you have to be low or moderate for 21 consecutive days before the hybrid model is enacted. There are 4 categories, high or substantial and it's a no go, low or moderate and the 21 day clock starts ticking.

We have 300,000 employees all over the country, when they put this together they realized we had 0 locations not in high or substantial. Really feels good to know they're making smart decisions and tying it to real data.

That being said, I doubt my county gets out of high or substantial for another 4 or more months. I'd bet I go back to work a couple days a week starting in March.
