Americans' views have dimmed on the way President Joe Biden is handling his job as president, with 42 percent approving and 50 percent disapproving, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University national poll of adults released today. This is the first time Biden's job approval has dropped into negative territory since taking office. In early August, 46 percent of Americans approved and 43 percent disapproved of the way Biden was handling his job.
In today's poll, Democrats approve 88 - 7 percent, while Republicans disapprove 91 - 7 percent and independents disapprove 52 - 34 percent.
Biden's numbers on his handling of the response to the coronavirus are mixed, with 48 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving. This compares to August, when he received a 53 - 40 percent approval rating on his handling of the coronavirus.
Americans give him a negative score on his handling of foreign policy, 34 - 59 percent. In August, 42 percent approved and 44 percent disapproved of his handling of foreign policy. They also give Biden a negative score on his handling of his job as Commander in Chief of the U.S. military, with 40 percent approving and 55 percent disapproving.
On his handling of the economy, Biden receives a negative 42 - 52 percent rating. In August, it was a slightly negative 43 - 48 percent rating.
On his handling of climate change, Americans are divided, as 42 percent approve and 45 percent disapprove. This compares to a positive 48 - 35 percent approval rating in August.
More than half of Americans, 54 - 41 percent, say they approve of President Biden's decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
Nearly 7 in 10 Americans, 69 - 24 percent, say it was the right thing to do to end the war in Afghanistan.
However, Americans give Biden a negative 31 - 65 percent score for the way he handled withdrawing all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
More than 6 in 10 Americans, 62 - 28 percent, say they think American troops will have to return to Afghanistan to fight terrorism. Republicans say 83 - 10 percent and independents say 65 - 25 percent that they think American troops will have to return to Afghanistan to fight terrorism, while Democrats say 52 - 38 percent they think American troops will not have to return to Afghanistan to fight terrorism.

When all you see on TV are pundits with links to the defense industry screaming about the pull out , this isn't surprising. Even MSNBC has had these people on. And then there's Andrea Mitchell.

(14,971 posts)What do they expect him to do re COVID.? An overwhelming majority of Americans wanted out of Afghanistan but give him low marks on foreign policy.
Looks like he fell among Independents and they lean conservative, don't they?

(24,394 posts)but polling is rarely static and it is virtually still a lifetime until next year. Afghanistan will recede as an issue (and let's face it, the relentlessly negative coverage defined it). COVID will hopefully get better but it's going to be a nasty fight with Republican Governors to the end. As COVID improves, the economy should continue to bounce back as well.

(24,394 posts)And so far, things are looking good on both ends. Newson will probably beat the recall and McAuliffe is leading Youngkin by a decent amount.

(10,823 posts)The election today and the Virginia governorship (and let's not forget NJ) are better barometers in this regard. During President Obama's tenure these early contests gave the GOP a basketful of wins that then turned into a 'shellacking' a year later. There's no guarantee, of course, but these early elections--the results and the margins--should give us a window into Democratic strengths and weaknesses at the state and local level prior to 2022.
And that's a good thing, something a little more substantial than ever-changing opinion polls this far out.

(30,613 posts)And he needs to keep Manchin and Sinema in check. They are the biggest challenge to his (and America's) future at this point.

(92,061 posts)All I know is the polls were wrong in the Turner Brown race, and NZy mayoral race, and have been all over the place until the last few weeks of the California race today
I say ignore the polls, and just get out and vote
I dont answer phones from unknown numbers, and I suspect others do the same

(64,853 posts)That said, I question their methodology in this case.
That's too precipitous a drop in a short time.
It doesn't make sense that 52% of independents disapprove, when 52% approved a month ago.
It's also 10% lower than the last Pew approval poll.
Doesn't smell right.

(5,443 posts)No matter that is was the right thing to do, the messy and deadly process was costly to Joe's approval rating. The coverage didn't help, but the collapse of our Afghan allies, takeover of the country by our enemies and death of US soldiers was not going to go over well, no matter the coverage. Biden echoed Truman's the "buck stops with him." Keep in mind that Truman was unpopular when he left office after the Korean War and firing MacArthur, but is now considered one of the greatest Presidents. However, the public should soon forget about what happened as time goes by.

(7,510 posts)45.9% approve and 49.2% disapprove.
The recent decline in approval appears to be mostly due to Afghanistan. This is likely to fade as a factor if Afghanistan remains reasonably quiet. So far the Taliban seem to be more interested in consolidating their domestic position and establishing good relations with their immediate neighbors, rather than making trouble for the US.

(3,213 posts)So stupid that his approval would drop that much.

(21,528 posts)for example.......
"On his handling of the economy, Biden receives a negative 42 - 52 percent rating."
you might read that and think "wow! people hate liberal policies. they must like austerity better"
but of those 52% how many are actually Dems who disapprove because they want to see the rich taxed, get a middle class tax cut, etc..........
if Congress would get off its filibustering ass and pass his agenda, all those numbers would swing positive.

(524 posts)I follow the polls daily through FiveThirtyEight.com and realclearpolitics.com
Biden's poll numbers dropping PROVES to the right wing idiots that the polls aren't fixed in Biden's favor. I guarantee that Biden's numbers will climb again and drop again, just like every other president since public opinion polling was invented in the 1930s.

(5,005 posts)They destroyed him on his strength (foreign policy). Then the public turned on him after he gave them all that money(help with food, children, extra unemployment, etc). I do think his administration deserves some of the blame about the covid surge. His administration pushed the no masks needed for vaccinated when they knew the unvaccinated, anti vax assholes would remove their masks too. All while Delta was already surging around the world. They should have been following that closely.

(41,933 posts)I cant blame them completely. Were exhausted. We want the impossible. We want a combination of the Hulk, FDR, Albert Einstein and our mommies. Hopefully well rally and realize we have to do this ourselves, vote and volunteer and work like mad for the things we need.
